The lawyer defending the Roma victims of an attack on a camp in the Kharkiv region was brutally attacked. And the leader of the attacker was none other than a local prosecutor. Apparently, the attackers were not even masked and there is CCTV coverage.
Bad.
Also bad that the newspaper used the picture of a Roma shantytown from Paris. It is the camp of the petite ceinture – on the tracks of a disused train line.

The story of children of refugees in Sweden who fall in total lethargy when their asylum demand is rejected. This so-called resignation syndrome has touched more than 400 children, with some of them remaining in this state for more than 2 years.
It affects many Roma.

Is it a trend? Or is it a change? The news this week on Roma in France are definitively different. Education, about a Romni in Montreuil fighting for the enrolment of Roma children in school; help, with a story of students of a prestigious French university (Science Po) devoting time to Roma in Poitiers; a Roma manifestation in Nice about the living conditions in Romania; a movie about a Roma family; an integration centre is being discussed in the North of France and one opened near Paris in Ivry; and then the usual news, a fire in a camp in the North, and a camp closure near Paris.
Finally, racism in France with Moslems and Roma coming on the top of the league … A depressing pattern in Europe.

In Marseilles, the state is trying to stabilise and improve the situation rather than the usual evictions. In Poitiers, a squat was dismantled. In Alfortville close to Paris, another squat was closed. Finally, a condemnation for murder in Biarritz og two Roma who killed a third one.

Matteo Salvini – the leader of the Norther League – is on a crusade. He wants to dismantle all the Roma camps and clearly also to expel them outside of Italy. He is grossly exaggerating the number of Roma living in those camps, citing 40’000 whereas the last serious statistic found less than 12’000.
In any case, the Lega agrees with the 5 stars, and it is not really good for Roma.

The DDR book “Nackt unter Wölfen” [Naked among wolves] was for a long time a classic. A tale of heroic communists who liberated Buchenwald from inside, and who saved a Jewish child. The child effectively existed and survived. But survived he did because another child was sent to his death in Auschwitz. He was a Sinto.

A socialist mayor of the North of France is calling for a manifestation to protest the illegal camps of Travellers (Mostly Roma – French Manouches, Lovara and Kalderaša). In Marseilles, the president of the largest soccer club invites 20 Roma children to watch a soccer game. Near Marseilles, the presentation of a book on Roma and their integration will take place on the 24th of May. Another article on the controversial exhibition in Paris – full of praise thereof, unfortunately. Finally, yet another camp is going to be closed.

The Berlin police intervened last Sunday in a park after finding a group of Roma roasting entire lambs on a spit for Djudjevan. They had to leave but other than that, no further actions were taken. The Roma were from Croatia and Bosnia.

A German Sinto, a distant relative of Unku, a Sintica who died in Auschwitz, recently wrote the continuation the book Ede and Unku. That book told the story of a friendship between a worker and a Sintica and was forbidden by the Nazis in 1933.
