An article on the so-called “Aussenlager” – the small camps affiliated with a major Concentration Camp but who have been largely forgotten or kept under silence since the end of the War.
This is bad, as this is one of the common places where crimes were committed.

It seems that the Roma have vanished from the French news … At least almost entirely. Only very few articles this week on the subject.
In Macon, in Burgundy, expulsed Roma have been re-settled in a gymnastic hall, and in the North, two young Romnja arrested for Burglary.

Orban in Germany

Viktor Orban, the Hungarian Prime Minister, visited the German CSU at the Monastery of Seeon in Bavaria. While they report the critique about that visit, the paper also mentions that Orban did a housing project for Roma in Mohacs, a small town in the South of Hungary. That was a fig leaf project and let’s be clear, Orban policies are not pro-Roma.

Many Don’t Say They Are Roma

In an Interview, Erich Schneeberger, the chairman of the Bavarian Association of Sinti and Roma says that many simply don’t say that they are Sinti or Roma in Germany.
Not a surprise, unfortunately.

France: Closure

An association “Roms Action” is forced to fire several of its employees due to cuts in subsidies from the state. Bad, as they did quite a good job in the camps.
And certainly not the best idea from the French state. The association is now trying to find people willing to work for free to help.

Rome: Not the Right Way

The city of Rome is resorting to bad ideas to “resolve” its issue with Roma camps around the city. They are trying to “convince” the Roma to return and even entice them with 10’000 EUR.
Problem is, these Roma have mostly been in Italy for more than 20 years, if not for much longer. The Italians kept them in camps instead of integrating them. Self-inflicted wound, and what they do is not a solution.

Movie and Stereotypes

The movie “Pure Hearts” from Roberto De Paolis tells the story of a young girl educated by a pious single mother who meets a parking guard who works across a Roma camp. And the Roma are there as a background with all stereotypes.
Good movie certainly, but touchy way to show cast Roma.

Not much news over the Christmas week in France. When there are other news, the 15 to 20 thousand Roma living in camps do not take much space in the press.
Christmas celebration with Roma in Nantes, near their camp; in Angers, portraits of forgotten Roma who were expulsed a while back in November; near Paris, social housing is being opened for a few families; and finally in the North, a caravan burnt down in a camp near Lilles.

Saul Friedlander

The writer and Hamburg native Saul Friendlander is interviewed in the context of the inauguration on the 27th of December of a monument on the site of the Hannover railway station. From this place, more than 8’000 Jews, Roma, Sinti and others were sent to their death. Saul Friedlander survived.
He is afraid of the increased denial of the Holocaust. So are we.

Very few news on Roma this week in France. Well, it’s Christmas week so bad news and Roma are not required to fill the papers.
First, a reportage on children of “Gitans” on M6 on January 7th. Just from the title and description, this doesn’t look good. Then, in Paris, an article on what happened to the inhabitants of a camp that was closed recently: Only 120 of the 300 people were taken care of, and some were proposed housing far from the schools of their children. In fact, children were removed from school rooters. Shame on them. Near Paris, a centre for integrated Roma will be put in place, whatever this means and will do. In Marseilles, the judges ponder on property rights following the fire in a squat that killed one person. In Montpellier, one again speaks about mistreatment of animals in a camp, while in Nantes, a solidarity movement is under way to help homeless and migrants. Finally, in Breizh Info (a really rabid news channel, a title page of three Roma who stole sheep and sold their meat.

Voluntary Return

The rate of voluntary returns in Germany has drastically decreased during the year. Germany is still deporting Roma refugees from Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro and even Kosovo back to their countries following the declaration of these as “safe countries”.
Safe maybe, but not necessarily for Roma.
