The president of YUROM from Nis, Osman Balić, is commenting on issues faced by Roma. His view is that the two biggest problems for Roma are on the one hand Roma themselves to the point where we do not need enemies and that the other main issue is growing neo-Fascism, which somehow found a home in Eastern Europe, and now even in the West. These are the two ends of the Roma problem according to him. In between there are many tiny problems, but they are negligible in comparison with these two issues.

This week is no different than others in France… Expulsions, shantytowns etc… The first articles are a view of a mother in a shantytown wanting a better life for her children. Then, in Paris, the shantytown on the tracks of the former “petite ceinture” railway will be closed; in Limeil, residents are trying to get a camp closed; in Melun, the Roma can stay on the site of the disaffected hospital; in Western France, in Rezé, Roma were moved to better abodes; in the North, a fire started in a building squatted by Roma; in Maubeuges, in the North too, a camp was closed; in Annecy, Roma recosntruc a camp from where they were recently evicted; and finally, in the centre of France, five Roma families are waiting for a housing in front of the prefecture.

Unfortunately, a standard week in France. And not only outside Paris or Lille, but also in smaller cities. First, an expulsion in St. Etienne, in the centre of France; then in Angers, in Western France, where Kosovo Roma will be expulsed from their camp and in Nantes, were a camp is slowly being closed; in the North of France, a fight for granting Roma children a special tariff in public transports (a tariff that all other school children have) is ongoing; and then, the Paris region with Roma allowed to stay (for the time being) in disaffected hospital buildings in Melun; a new illegal camp along the Marne river; a camp in Bonneuil threatened with closure; and a hefty bill for a clean-up of a former camp in Poissy, on the site of the Paris St. Germain football club training centre.
