Not that many news in France this week (that is besides the Front National statement on Rroma)… A police affair in Montpellier where two persons were detained and beaten by Rroma after they came to their camp to gather scrap metal, which was followed by the arrest of four Rroma and their prompt liberation as they were not the ones who detained the others. Bad. And then, in Bondy, near Paris, the mayor is facing citizen who want the Rroma out; in Villeurbane, near Lyon, a camp was destroyed by fire, leaving more than 100 people on the street; in Montpellier, associations are asking for a stop of stigmatisation of the Rroma; and finally, in the North, a squat in Lille is still making the headlines – all following the aggressions there.

A French Front National politician is proposing to recover the gold teeth of Rroma to make them pay for their lodgings … This in a small town near Grenoble.
Last time this was done was at Auschwitz! If you had any doubts about the French Front National, this is it.
The Mayor is called Franck Sinisi. His full citation is: “pour loger les Roms, je pense qu’il pourrait y avoir un auto-financement. La Métropole devrait leur payer un dentiste… afin de récupérer les dents en or” [to lodge Roma, I think that there should be a self funding. The state should pay them a dentist … so as to recover their gold teeth].

According to the “Supreme Board Member of the Federation of Roma Associations Ahmet İzgi”, a majority of Rroma are going to vote in giving Erdogan full powers and are grateful of Erdogan.
Who by the way closed Sulukule, the oldest Rroma Mahala (settlement) in Istambul, and relocated Rroma outside, or whose police goes on rampage in Rroma settlements like in Izmir, and so on.

Rome – No More Camps – Not!!!

In spite of promises from the municipality and its Five Stars Mayor, Rome is ready to open a new Rroma camp on its outskirts “as a temporary measure” …
On March 7th, the Welfare Department has approved a measure aimed at identifying a new “picnic area” (SIC!) intended to “welcome and provide a staying possibility for 120 Roma families “, with a “service management”. In practice it is a new settlement to replace the current “Camping River”, in which there are 420 people, for which management services will expire on June 30 of this year.

More camps being closed in the Lille region, following the accusations of aggressions by Rroma youngsters, with one camps dismantled in Lille Hellemes; and a collective is asking the Mayor of Lille whether he wants to “clean up” the town of Rroma (Martine Aubry is the socialist mayor of Lille); then a new trend – garbage – with two articles, one on Rroma helping cleaning out their camp, the other stating that tons of garbage were left by Rroma – both are an old story used to justify eviction; some news in the West on the Holocaust; and finally, some better news in Montpellier, with an association calling for the end of stigmatisation of Rroma, and with a mediation being put in place to allow children to attend school.

Students of the university of Reading stages a „Pikey“ night. The term refers to Gypsy and Travellers and is exceedingly derogatory.
After protests, the students apologised.
A bit late in our opinion. They certainly would not have staged a “N..” night, so why about Rroma?

Thürigen and Graves

The German state of Thürigen followed the lead of other German regions and now protects the graves of Rroma and Sinti holocaust victims. Many of thé families of these victims cannot afford the yearly fee and thus according to German customs, the graves would have been removed 25 years after the death of the person.
Good that those who survived the holocaust can rest in peace.

Lots of news in France this week on the aggressions in the North of France in Lille, following aggressions and petty thefts, two Rroma camps were closed by the municipality. This follows the closure of other camps in Lille following claims of sexual aggressions by Rroma minors. Bad, and a lot of articles.
On a more “normal” footing, a camp is being closed in Hellemes, in the North of France; one camp was closed in Paris near Porte de la Chapelle; a fire in Vitry, near Paris forced the evacuation of ca. 70 Rroma; another fire occurred in Montpellier is a camp; yet another fire destroyed a camp in Grimaud, near St. Tropez in the South of France; and finally, a camps is awaiting it closure in Marseilles.

An Irish genetical study recently showed that Travellers, while of Irish origins, are a separate group following several centuries of de-facto separation.
And very shortly thereafter, the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and the Dail (Parliament) recognise them as an ethnic group.
GOOD!

P.S. Switzerland please take heed… After 600 years in the country, Rroma are still not recognised as a minority.
