Camp or Favela?

Let’s call a cat a cat … An interesting article in the French press about camps, all too often associated with Rroma whereas they are simply the result of poverty and lack of access to the housing market. So in effect favelas which are not “part of the Rroma culture” as is all too often portrayed in the Press.

There is a new camp in the North of Paris; while another camp near St. Denis was closed; an article about municipalities from the Left who try to expel the poor, such as Lille or Montreuil; the story of a squat in Angers, in Western France; and a report of the first meeting of a collective in the North that wants to help Rroma.

France: The Itinerary of Rromni

An article in a French paper about a Rroma family, especially a Rromni, Angelica Boti, who arrived in France in 2000. What is interesting here is that it is a rather conservative paper who presents this story and speaks about the will to integrate of the family.
This is new, and positive for a change.

The local Rroma organisations have been greeting this progress all the while remaining cautious…

UK: Really Bad !!!

An article from the Daily Mail is really bad … It speaks about a proposal for migrants to the UK to take an oath of allegiance (which this paper seems to like) and bashes the critics who “ignore” the facts.
And if you read the facts about Rroma, well … They are again being used as a bad example to illustrate the ills of migration.

This week is quieter than the normal in France on Rroma. Close to Paris, in Pierefitte, the residents ask for the closure of a camp; in the Corbeil-Essonnes, also close to Paris, Rroma who were left of the street following the fire of their squat have found a place to stay; in Ervry-Grégy sur Yerres, the clean-up of a former Rroma camp will cost 360’000 Euro, here one has to say that often, non Rroma take the opportunity to dump their garbage in such situations; in Montreuil, the mayor and administration is going a long way to try to eliminate all traces of the presence of Rroma – Rroma who are still on the street.
In other parts of France, in the North, an association is promoting fraternity with Rroma; in the North still, a camp was evicted but the Rroma relocated themselves nearby; in Nantes, 80 voluntaries helped cleaning up the garbage left after the eviction of two Rroma camps; and near Toulouse, a mayor is asking for the closure of a camp.
In Nearby Belgium, a camp was closed and here, o wonder, its residents were lodged by the social services …

Another result of the survey in the EU on Rroma: Almost half of the interviewed Rroma in Portugal felt they have been discriminated against at some point in the past year! This is an extremely high percentage in a Western European Country.

France: Politician Condemned

Paul-Marie Coûteaux, a member of the Front National and a close ally of Marine Le Pen was condemned for racism for statements he published in his blog where he suggested that Rroma “ be concentrated in camps” …
This is by far not the first politician from this party who has made racist statements. He is not appealing his condemnation.

Usual lot of news in France. First, a mayor in the XVth Arrondissement in Paris refused the access to the school canteen to 20 poor children, many of which were Rroma. His ratiuonale, they were getting a free lunch funded by Emmäus, a chrity, close to the school. BAD!
Other than that: A fire in a squat near Paris puts 50 people out in the street; a new solution is proposed to the Rroma who were expulsed in Montreuil more than hundred days ago and whose children are not is school as they have no permanent residence; another fire in Marseilles; better news in the North of France, with a collective helping Rroma integrate, the story of Rroma who are there since 6 years, and the constriction of social housing; and in the West, the creation of four or five camping sites for Rroma (it is an obligation in France) and the questions of a cleanup of former camping sites that are full of garbage, although often not left by Rroma).

A review of the last Album from the German Rapper Sido. He recently acknowledged that he is Rrom – but calles himself “Zigeuner” and a sentence in one of his songs “Meine Leute haben’s nicht so leicht, also wenn du nicht drauf aufpasst, ist es meins.” saying “my people don’t have it easy, so if you don’t pay attention to it, it is mine” is deemed more than controversial, as it uses the old stereotype of theft and Rroma.

Czech Republic: Germany Will Pay

Germany has agreed to compensate the Czech Rroma who survived the Holocaust. Good, but it will not ruin Germany: 71 years after the end of the War, not many are still alive. And anyhow not many survived in the Czech lands.
A short apology from the Czech would be nice, as they deported the Rroma themselves, in 1941.
