According to Abel Ravacs, the Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Slovak Republic for Roma Communities, pre-school education is the right mean to further Roma integration in Slovakia.
Many people came to that conclusion around 25 years ago… What has been done? Nothing so far.

Many news on camps this week. Main topic, a camp near Paris in Buchelay. The camp is slated for closure but there is no alternative. In the North, a collective defending Roma is set for the long term. They have done a real good job so far. In Western France, in Nantes, a camp burnt down after a fight. In Toulouse, 30 children live in unacceptable conditions; in Sète, in the South of France, a camp is slowly emptying; in Nice, a place to help children after school has just opened; and in the Alps, a squat was evacuated.

Four people are under house arrest in Lviv for the murder against a Rom last June. This definitively seems mild in comparison of the crime. Several of the perpetrators are minors and go to school. They also only face mild penalties (3 to 7 years of jail).

Very few news on Roma in the French Press this week. First, a map of Lille, in the North of France on the Roma camps to understand the expulsions during the summer of 2018. It clearly shows that the closure of two large camps resulted in many more smaller ones being created. So much for expulsions … Near Paris, a manifestation for Roma who live in a camp that may be closed; the winter pause of expulsions saving a camp; and a clean-up action following a closure. Finally, in Avignon, three Roma schoolchildren live under a tent.

A real first in Hungary: The Tribunal of Eger in Hungary’s North East condemned the Hungarian state for segregation of school in Gyöngyöspata. The state needs to pay and indemnity to 60 young Roma. (Article in Hungarian and French translation).

A new movie aims at deconstructing the stereotypes on Roma in Marseille – this is new in France. In Sètes, in the South, a temporary camp will be closed mid-November. In Montreuil, near Paris, yet another evacuation, and a pledge for the children who are the victims of such evacuations, losing their right to attend school in the process. Near Paris, in Noisy le Grand, a squat is provoking tensions in the neighbourhood. In the North, a Romni who is part of an integration program is again expulsed – nasty. Finally, the story of a young Rom from Romania who has created is own enterprise in Strasbourg.

The European Public Health Alliance is making an analysis based on existing material on the life expectancy gap between Roma and the general population.

The Plenipotentiary of the Government for Roma Communities Ábel Ravasz, the Public Protector of Rights Mária Patakyová, and the Principal School Inspector Viera Kalmárová signed a joint declaration on desegregation of the education system of Slovakia, pointing out the shortcomings in the education system.

According to Mr. László Kövér, the Speaker of the Parliament, Hungary which currently has a real labour shortage can count on two pillars: One is in the education system, which and the other is the “non-integrated part of the Roma population in Hungary. The education system has been underfunded and is segregating Roma, and Roma, especially in the countryside are forced to work in menial jobs under a public works program…
This is not really promising.

The last report of the Association 21 July, shows that in Italy, there are about 26’000 Roma and Sinti living in emergency housing and camps. 43% of Roma and Sinti are Italian citizens. 55% are children who are more likely to pay the price of social isolation, lack of schooling, and poor health care.

In the afternoon of September 13, Roma families of the Camping River camp decided to return to their homes in Via Tenuta Piccirilli 207, on the Tiberina, in the North of Rome. They were protesting against the illegitimate eviction ordered by Matteo Salvini and Virginia Raggi on July 26, 2018: “we want to guarantee a school and a home for all our children: we cannot live on the streets”.
It is a shame …
