A new campaign by Spain’s Roma Foudnation highlights a girls who wants to be a doctor. Unfortunately, the article highlights stereotypes stating that “6 out of 10” Rroma children do not complete their mandatory education … Well, would be good if they knew how many Rroma they are. 6 out of how many ???
Another article, this time from Slovakia, on the Al Jazeera documentary “Educating Igor”.
Al Jazeera published a reportage on a young Rrom from Eastern Slovakia. He believes that education is key in changing the future of Rroma.
Slovakia was internationally criticised for forced sterilisations, segregation in schools, brutality against Rroma etc.
In his speech to Rroma representatives, Pope Francis told Rroma not to fall into crime so as to break free of prejudice. Translated, this de facto means that the pope thinks that (a) many Rroma are criminals and (b) this is the root cause of their discrimination.
Wrong in both cases …
In spite of clear laws on schooling in France, it is not that easy for Rroma children to get into schools, especially if they do not have a proper address. In some cases, one has to go court …
SHAME!
The council of Europe human rights’ watchdog, Niels Mužnieks slammed Slovakia and the Czech Republic for the segregation and discriminations in schools for Rroma. These countries are continuing to place Rroma children in “special schools”, often for mentally disabled children. They also criticised the physical violence against Rroma by the police in Slovakai as well as other segregating and discriminating actions in those countries.
Shame on them!
Three articles on Rroma children and schools in France. In one, the destiny of a child who did not make it and dropped out; a second one stating that the state is abandoning children; and a last one about Rroma children “saving” a rural school from closure.
And the usual French review – more of the same. In Wissous, tensions are rising; in Metz, 23 Rroma are without lodgings; a fire in a camp in Ris Orangis, not surprising since temperatures are dropping and heating is needed; a Turkish tourist was mugged by three young Rroma in the RER in Paris; the site of a dismantled camp near Toulouse is being cleaned out; and more Rroma kids in schools in Dijon.
France continues its seemingly never ending circle. How about changing it an investing energies into something more constructive? In Montreuil, 117 families were expulsed; in Wissous, in the North of France, benevoles are helping children to get to school, all the while shadowed by the worries about a fire in the camps there; in Savoy, a Rroma camo was destroyed by a fire; in Lille, Rroma have a three months reprieve; in Tourcoing, in the North of France, Rroma were served an eviction letter; while the association Eurrom tries to integrate Rroma;
A report on the so-called “Bildungsberater” in Germany, people who help the integration of Rroma children in schools. Most of them, as the person cited here, are Rroma themselves.
Bravo!
Representatives of the Rroma education fund met last Friday in Budapest and re-iterated that education is key for Rroma. Without it, no integration will truly be possible.
More of the same in France: A fire in a camp near Lyon, with wounded firemen; in Sucy, the mayor who had been accused of discrimination has been freed; in Tourcoing, Rroma are expulsed; in Lille, the expulsion order is being reviewed by a judge; in Choisy, Rroma were prevented creating a camps; in Nantes, Rroma children are enrolled in school, in spite of their upcoming eviction; and one of the young Rroma expulsed from La Courneuve is being casted in a reality show.
An appeal to the government to enrol Rroma children who live in camps. This is a fundamental right!
Amnesty International launched a petition to the Czech government protesting the enrollment of Rroma children in schools for children with disabilities. This practice is still continuing in spite of multiple protests.
THIS HAS TO STOP!
An article about the engagement of NGOs in Lausanne to enroll 6 young migrant Rroma in schools there. Well done, but let’s not forget that these migrant Rroma represent less than ONE PERCENT of the Rroma in Switzerland. And these go to school, and even to university!
