In the Polsih town of Oświęcim, better known by its German name, a pogrom against Roma took place in October 1981. Antoni Rokicki’s report “Wystraczy spark” is a documentary on these events.

Dr. Joanna Talewicz, an anthropologist from Oświęcim and president of the W Stronę Dialogu Foundation, talks about the fact that the pogrom is still a taboo topic, even in some Roma families. “We, the Roma, often bear collective responsibility for things we did not do,” she says.

One of those articles in the Ukrainian press… The article says “In Brovary [On the Eastern Side of Kyiv], a man lives on a bench, and Roma families have settled in his house and lead an immoral (sic.) lifestyle”. According to local residents, Roma have been living in two houses on the street for more than two yearsThey are aggressive, threaten their neighbors, deal with drugs, organize car races on the streets, etc. The houses where their large families live are unsanitary, children do not study and do not go to kindergartens.

Difficult to unravel, but bad in any case.

Romnja, who were sterilized in the past in present day Slovakia, are demanding compensation. This initiative has been going on for more than twenty years and is still not fulfilled. It is possible that, like other problems, society in Slovakia will “avoid” this issue. Promises will remain at the verbal level, but we will not receive real compensation.

Czechia introduced a law to compensate women a while back, but are still dragging their feet in actually compensating the victims.

Czechia: The Wall

25 years ago, On October 25th, in the Czech town of Úští nad Labem, the local government built a fence made of prefabricated parts, which separated the Roma neighbourhood from the rest.

The structure, 1.8 meters high and 60 meters long, was removed after six weeks under pressure from the government and after protests by Czech and foreign human rights defenders, who saw it as a manifestation of racism.

A clash between a pupil and a teacher at a primary school in Koryčany in the Kroměříž region is still under investigation by the police. It is preliminarily classified as a misdemeanor. The family of a 12-year-old Roma boy is convinced that the teacher knocked the son to the ground and strangled him. The father of the Roma boy apologized for the threats he uttered to the residents of Koryčany.

The celebration of the Day of the Croatian Police and their patron Saint Michael was held in the building of the Međimurje Police Department in Čakovec. So far, ok.

The statement of the article saying that “Police officers should be given back their authority in the field, so that they can be efficient, especially in Roma settlements!” is definitively not ok.

On Saturday, September 28, a protest was held in Šentjerne in support of a parent who physically attacked an elementary school student because he allegedly bullied his son. It turned out that the Roma child who was attacked was not the perpetrator of peer violence at all. The protesters also pointed out the violence that Roma children allegedly cause in school.

The general secretary of the Federal Association of Sinti and Roma, Romeo Franz, is said to have been severely discriminated against by an undertaker in Homburg. Franz reported to the taz that the owner of the funeral home refused to sell him a coffin and funeral service. He said that he did not do business with Sinti and Roma. Franz described the incident as “dismaying” in an interview with the taz.

Rudolf Huliak was responsible for a recent vulgar incident that outraged a large number of Slovaks. At Wednesday’s (September 25) session of the parliament, the vice-chairman of the National Council, Andrej Danek (SNS), was bothered by the fact that deputy Lucia Plaváková (PS) had stickers on her computer. He was bothered by the fact that these were stickers with an LGBTI motif. Plaváková did not respond to calls to remove them and objected that she did not violate the rules of procedure.

Danko kicked her out of the hall. Huliak subsequently called Plaváková a “bitch who he does not consider a woman” at a press conference.

Another article about Roma being refused services in a café. The cafe in the Mlyny shopping center in Nitra made a very bad headline a few days ago. A video on social networks captured the discrimination “live”. The author of the video was Marcel, whom the waitress refused to serve because he is Rom.

He came to the cafe with his friends, but they refused to let them in and order. As the waitress also said on camera, Roma are not allowed to enter the cafe because they “shout and don’t pay”.

Germany hosted the thematic visit on combating anti-Gypsyism within the framework of the Committee of Experts on Roma and Traveller Issues (ADI-ROM). The partner countries Croatia, France, Lithuania, Romania and Switzerland participated in the visit.

Very nice… Especially when you know that Switzerland doesn’t recognise Roma as a national minority, and when you see that racism is exceedingly difficult to combat there. A case against a rightist politician was lost recently. He had stated “if one doesn’t recognise a ‘Gypsy’ [Zigeuner] immidiately, one smells him”. That is not racist in Switzerland …

Only notable news in France this week about Roma is about the arrestation of three people for a tentative of arson on a Roma camp. Clearly, the fact that the three were of North African origins opened doors to some of the most extreme rightist parties, alothough some of their followers did the same.
