France: Travellers, Rroma, Gitans

Published by:

An attempt by a French news outlet to explain the difference between travellers, Rroma, Gitans, Manouches, etc.
BAD … First it still uses “Tzigane” as the general term. And then, states that Rrom means man – no, it means husband or someone from that group and so on. Would be good if journalists inform themselves before writing things.

UK: Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire and Hate Crimes

Published by:

The police of Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire have launched initiatives aiming at reducing and preventing hate crime. In Nottinghamshire, this is explicitly geared towards Rroma and Travellers while in Yorkshire, this is more general.
Good that they do it, bad that is is required.

UK: 1st Year Pupils’ Statistics

Published by:

The UK released comprehensive statistics about the performance and capabilities of 1st year school children. As is the case in the UK, ethnicity is also recorded. Rroma and travellers’ children are doing particularly badly in this context. Not surprising if one consider that (a) most Rroma are very recent migrants from Eastern Europe and Balkans and (b) integrated Rroma almost never reveal their identity openly.

Switzerland and Travellers

Published by:

Another article on Rroma travellers in Switzerland. And the perpetuation of new myths: There are more and more of them coming in Switzerland (FALSE, exactly as before), they need so-called “Transit” camping place, even though they are not in transit through Switzerland but work here, etc. And on top, the segregation of camping sites between Swiss travellers and the others is considered almost as natural.SHAME!- Die Frage der Fahrenden sorgt für Kopfzerbrechen. Travellers Camp and Bern

Published by:

The Bern Government is trying to take measures against abuses and misuses of one of the travellers sites in the canton. Apparently, the list of complaints is long, including not paying rent, destroying or damaging infrastructure, aggressive behaviour, and not sending children to school.
As usual, reality is somewhat less dramatic.

Switzerland: Criminal Complaint against Politician

Published by:

The main Rroma organisations from Switzerland, together with the Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker lodged a criminal complaint for racism against the Green Liberal politician Nathan Güntensperger from Bern. This politician made derogatory and generalising comments against all Rroma in a letter to a newspaper.
The bad thing is that the 20 Minutes paper added a poll to the article: The choices were: Do you agree with the criminal complaint? No, one is allowed to say what one thinks! And a last one which was worse. Interestingly, the poll has been changed, but not for the better. That is about conflicts with travellers …

Switzerland: Travellers in Bern

Published by:

Switzerland: Travellers in Bern

Again bad press on travellers in Switzerland. Usual story: Forced to camp somewhere in the wild or on a rented field, there are not enough sanitary installations nor containers for garbage, and as a result, people complain about garbage and smell.

This is how you force a reputation on people.

Switzerland and Travellers: Expelled in Neuchatel

Rroma travellers were again expelled in Neuchatel. This is becoming a real habit, and for some reason has been spiking this year, in spite of the fact that there are not that many more non-Swiss travellers than in previous years.

Camp for Travellers in Canton Bern, Switzerland

Camp for Travellers in Canton Bern, Switzerland

The canton  Bern is asking the federal government for money to install a new camping site for foreign travellers. The price tag is ridiculously high (several million Swiss francs), and anyhow, why are the Swiss segregating by nationality? This is the outrageous thing.

The rightist party, the SVP is jumping on the bandwagon too.

Switzerland: Rroma Travellers left Neuchatel …

The Rroma who made the headlines in the last month in the Canton Neuchatel apparently left. Not far, that we know, but they are no longer in Neuchatel. A canton that tries to forbid foreign travellers from coming.

Let’s hope a lot more visit them!

Neuchatel (Switzerland): Camping re-opened

Published by:

Neuchatel (Switzerland): Camping re-opened

The authorities of the Canton of Neuchatel, having de-facto banned non Swiss Rroma travellers from their canton, are scheduled to re-open a camping spot for them. They were facing a few families who stubbornly refused to accept this interdiction and who have been working in the last few months in that region.
