“Documentary”

Published by:

A review of a Channel 4 documentary “60 Days with the Gypsies”. Well, the documentary reinforces some stereotypes, but the reporter did somehow change his mind and came to be with his origins …

A new Book in France

Published by:

Last, a book for children featuring a young Romni – Luludja (sic. Normally, in Romanes, the first name would be Luludji [flower] not in plural) – but also strengthening the stereotypes. Clearly she comes from Romania (all Roma are from there for the French) in search for a better  live, lands in camps etc.

Sometimes, these books are counterproductive.

French Chronicle …

Published by:

Not much this week, which in itself is good. The music festival “Welcome en Tsiganie” celebrates its 15th upcoming edition, although frankly, it also perpetuates some clichés about Roma. Other than that, a peasant angry at Roma for littering his field near Paris; in the South, a violent fight between 4 Kosovo Roma; also in the South, a mayor tries to hinder Roma from setting up new camps by mobilising hunters (yes!); in Grenoble, another squat; and finally, in the north, 3 Roma arrested for suspected stealing of metal from cemeteries have been freed.

Jimmy Carr

Following the disgusting statement of Jimmy Carr on the Holocaust, news laws could in the future curb these kind of statements an make Netflix liable.

Alina Serban

Published by:

An article in French on Alina Serban’s latest theatre play. One should contrast the way the French speaking press reports on it with the way the German and English speaking one does.

The French have a long way to go.

Slovakia, Roma, and the EU

Up to one billion Euro is earmarked for Roma integration from the EU. In addition. Another 150 Mio are to be granted as part of the Covid Recovery. This is quite a sum, but how will it be spent?

Let the Light In

The latest piece from Alina Serban, a Romani actress.

Bravo!

Germany and Racial Profiling

Published by:

A court in Germany concluded that racial profiling is not correct and forbidden in the case of the control of a young man from Guinea. Racial profiling also affects Roma.

Good.

Slovakia, the Police, and Roma

Published by:

The Slovak Roma Union went to court for an alleged attack by a policeman against 5 Roma children in a Roma settlement during a quarantine. The children apparently had strayed too far from the settlement.

In a resolution on January 20, the investigator referred to a section of the Criminal Procedure Code, which states that the prosecution is stopped if “there is no doubt that the act for which the prosecution is being conducted has not occurred”.
