The Bulgarian government seems to make an effort to make sure Roma children are going to school in the country.
Nice to try to convince the parents, but definitively not enough. One needs to prevent discrimination which exists in school and make sure the children have the means to buy books and material.

An article about the Moslem Roma “threat” in Bulgaria where several articles in the local press state that the biggest threat to the country is the islamisation of the local Roma.

The US ambassador attended a ceremony at a school for Roma children. It is a special school for ca. 80 pupils, aiming at a 0 dropout rate.
But it is a segregated school – this is really bad.

The Bulgarian Interior Minister Valentin Radev promised the return of Law and Order in Asenovgrad by adding policemen policing the Roma neighbourhood there. The city had been the scene of riots against Roma – allegedly because of petty criminality …
The right answer would be a different one.

The removal of Roma settlement continues in Bulgaria. This time, Roma 149 houses in Zaharna Faharna that are deemed to be illegal were destroyed.
Illegal means it was built without formal approval/land registry entry which happens to be the case of all Roma Mahalas.

25 young Hungarian Roma will be travelling to Varna, Bulgaria, to attend the Phiren Amenca Network conference. They will meet Roma and Gadže from all over Europe to discuss a variety of topics regarding Roma.

The Bulgarian deputy prime minister has promised more police presence in the Roma parts of Plovdiv. Not to protect its citizen … But to “resolve” the problem of the Roma communities.

A Bulgarian, Petar Nizamov, is hunting refugees and Roma at the Bulgarian Turkish border. He is the president of a group called “Civic Group for the Defence of Borders, Woman, and Faith”, and has regularly been accused of violence against Roma. He is also claiming not to have any reveues but flouts expensive cars and lifestyle…

An article about Bulgarian Roma. The article is probably well intentioned, but by showcasing a prostitute in Germany who wires 139’000 Euros back to her home contry, contributes to perpetuate negative stereotypes.

The Bulgarian city of Asenovgrad, in the South central part of the country, saw a huge manifestation by resident against Roma. They are protesting the “illegal” residence of Roma and their “criminal” activities.
Needless to say that the illegal part has to do with the privatisation of the land after communism – Roma have been there since the Byzantine times, and the criminal activities, if any are not related to ethnicity but to poverty.

Traffickers in new-borns have been condemned to heavy prison sentences (10 years for two men, and 5 years for one women). They were accused to have brought pregnant women to Greece for the purpose of adoption of their child at birth. The babies were sold for up to 15’000 Euros.
Many of the mothers came from Rroma ghettos. The condemned, though, seem to have been Bulgarian (otherwise, chances are this would have been said …)

Again one AfD member shows the true colours of that German Party. He is being sued by Roma and Sinti organisations for racism after having posted a post on Facebook stating „Kann es sein, daß wir ein Zigeunerproblem haben?“ – [can it be that we have a Gypsy problem]…The post continued on the increased criminality that came as the result of the migration of Romanian and Bulgarian Rroma.
