C14, the group that attacked the Roma camp in Kiev last week originally posted photos on Facebook claiming that they had simply gone to the site to collect garbage. Only later did the videos of the attacks emerge, some of them posted by C14th members.

Poland: In Court

IsAmUxPompa is one of the most popular Polish youtubers. His channel is watched by nearly 1.8 million people. While most of the films have to do with games, he has also uploaded films with definitively racist content and the prosecutor’s office is accusing him of insulting a group of Roma origin. Initially, the defence of Szymon K. even applied for conditional dismissal of the case, which the court ultimately did not agree to. He is now to be judged.
Let’s hope also condemned – which is far from certain in Poland nowadays.

Slovakia, Roma, and the Press

In the media, Roma are mostly depicted as a problem and as criminals. They are the most negatively represented group in Slovakia. Majority views sees them as a threat. These are just a few conclusions resulting from the Strategy for Mitigating Stereotypes and Prejudices against the Roma Population, prepared for the Interior Ministry.
This is also shown, by the research carried out by Romano Kher – the Roma House and the Institute for Well-Managed Society. Most media reports on Roma in which respondents’ residence was identifiable were talking about Roma in settlements. However, according to the latest Atlas of Roma Communities in 2013, the majority of Roma live scattered among the majority. Only about 18% of the Roma live in segregated settlements outside the municipality. In absolute figures this translates to about 74-thousand people.

Frankfurt: Solidarity

A demonstration for solidarity towards inhabitants of a ghetto in Frankfurt took place yesterday. The ghetto, in a former industrial compound, is almost exclusively inhabited by Roma from Romania.

Slovakia: Education and Inclusion

NGOs in Slovakia have criticised the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport (MŠVVaŠ) of the Slovak Republic on their implementation of inclusive education of pupils from socially disadvantaged environment based on the approved Strategy of the Roma Integration for 2020.
The criticism is based on the NGOs monitoring report on the implementation of measures of the national Roma integration strategy in Slovakia that was delivered to the EU.

More on the Ukraine Attacks

Representatives of the nationalist organization C14 drove the Roma out of the camp on the Bald Mountain in Kiev and burnt their tents and belongings. Law enforcers did not react in any way.
According to the Roma, things did not go so smoothly. The Roma from the camp told us that the nationalists from C14 threatened them with knives, stones, and even pistols. As the “Gromadske radio” reports, all Roma families have now returned to Transcarpathia.
So far, only Ukrainian and Slovak Media have reported this event.

Ukrainian neo Nazi vigilantes burnt down a Roma camp and drove away the Roma in Kiev. These Roma are from Transcarpathia – the Western part of the Ukraine that lies on the Western flank of the Ukraine towards Hungary and Slovakia. The region has many Carpathian Roma who are extremely poor.

Giorgio Halilovic was born on August 12, 1982 in Rome in a camp and was the beneficiary of a EU funded program on integration. In the afternoon of April 12th, 2018, he was arrested by the police, transferred to the Office of the Police Headquarters of Rome and officially expelled from Italy. The next day he was put on an airplane and taken to Sarajevo, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country he had never been to.
This is the new policy of the Five Star movement and of the Rome Mayor Raggi.

The Prešov region will have a new counsellor for “socially excluded” communities – i.e. for Roma. The Role was given to Róbert Neupauer, who has field experience, mainly from a Roma settlement in the village of Križova Ves (Kežmarok district), where he worked in a mission-community centre.
The role is supposed to look for concrete solutions to the problems faced by Roma in the region.
