The award winning Bosnian Roma actor Nazif Mujić died last Sundy in utter poverty in Bosnia, five years after having won the silver bear at the Berlin festival.

The Hungarian police has been given extended rights to conduct identity and physical checks based on a “heightened state of alert” … Note that the police conducts many checks, more than a million a year for a population of less than ten million.
There is a real fear that these extra powers will be negatively felt by the Roma minority.

Martin Kotleba, the extreme rightist party leader in Slovakia is trying to stop the affirmative action program for Roma by proposing an amendment to the anti-discrimination law.
Let’s hope he fails.

On the tenth anniversary of the Kosovo, Roma are often forgotten. This is bad, as the UCK actually ethnically cleansed the land of its Roma and there is little space for any minority.

A manifestation took place in Brno, Czech Republic, to protest the Holocaust denial by politicians of the extreme rightist party SPD and its leader Tomio Okamura.

The news that isn’t one: The police confiscated “several pieces of weapons” and “smaller quantities of drugs” in several Roma settlements as they had received information that Roma were engaged in weapon dealing…
If they were and are, it is a real retail operation judging by the reported numbers… How about the simpler explanation of poverty and petty criminality?

The European Commissioner for Justice and Consumer Protection, Věra Jourová is concerned about the situation of Roma pupils in Slovakia. She said it is inconceivable that discrimination and segregation of Roma children and pupils is currently taking place in the heart of Europe.

A Slovak NGO is launching a campaign to fight against discrimination and for integration. They are trying to point at positive examples of young Roma who, with the help of the NGO’s donors will develop their talents and become positive examples.

The Slovak Interior minister Kalinak lost his gamble. The could not pass his controversial law to collect data on “Roma criminality”.

According to Zuza Kumanová, an anthropologist, recent weeks in Slovakia have seen an
increase in anti-Romani rhetoric. Opposition and coalition politicians have been overtaken by proposals for coercive measures in relation to this national minority.

Vladimír Ledecký the independent mayor of Spišský Hrhov writes about how Roma issues can be solved. He says that the current “schizophrenia” does not help, and that “convincing all people to pull the car in the same direction” is the way to go. He advocates work, education, and measures to help with accumulated debts. His village is actually one the of the model of integration in the country.
