Slovakia: Education or Business

It seems that some schools in Slovakia are considering Roma children as a business rather than as pupils who need to be taught. In brief, the staff selected children, apparently overwhelmingly Roma, diagnosing them with various health disabilities, which resulted in their subsequent inclusion in a group of pupils with special educational needs where the school could receive more than twice the amount of money than for standard pupils.
Slovakia has a long story of putting Roma children in classes for mentally disabled people – before basically as racism, now for profit…

Czech President: Really????

The Czech President Miloš Zeman, in an interview broadcasted on Cable TV in the Czech Republic stated that 90% of “inadaptable citizen” are Roma and only10% are white.

The Full quote is: “It is probably true that 90 percent of them are Roma. Nevertheless, there may also be 10 percent of white lazybones and we have to approach both [groups] equally. Only if we discriminated against either of the two groups, either positively or negatively, it would amount to human rights violation,”

Not sure how Mr. Zeman arrived at his numbers, but he certainly has preconceived views of the world. Shame on him. Activists are protesting and calling for people not to re-elect Zeman in the January 2018 elections.

France: Murder and Beggars

Three Bulgarian Roma have been condemned to heavy prison sentences for the murder of another Rom in the North of France. According to the police, the fight arose over the control of the “lucrative” begging in the region.
This is bad, first because begging has never really been a criminal activity, much less a lucrative one. So here, the stereotypes of the Roma begging criminal rings is in full swing.

Kosiče: Exhibition

The Eastern Slovak Gallery in Košice presents an exhibition of Roma Photos from Subcarpathian Ukraine from the beginning of the 20th century.

It is a presentation of previously unknown photographs of Roma from a Czech official, translator and amateur photographer Rudolf Hůlka, whose work is kept in the Slavonic Library in Prague.

Slovakia: Addressing Criminality

The Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák presented measures to tackle the criminality in Roma settlements in Slovakia. He singled three problematic regions (Banska Bystrica, Prešov, and Kosiče) as the pilot for the measures.
He proposes not only to tackle the petty criminality that comes from poverty and alienation, but also the issue of crimes against minorities.
Only unfortunate item here is presenting this almost as measures against Roma crimes …
