A project in Žiari nad Hronom, which was supposed to teach long-term unemployed Roma to work, has been stopped. Although it only lasted less than two years, the City Hall decided to cancel it. They claim that the experiment was only partially successful and after the loss of jobs from the Labour Office, they no longer have work for Roma.

An exhibition on the premises of the Nitra Gallery will last until 30 April and will showcase the HateFree project, which was first presented in the DOX Center of Contemporary Art in Prague. This project is responding to an increase in hate towards minorities in the Czech Republic. In its present form, the exhibition was established in cooperation with the Museum of Romany Culture in Brno and presents the work of artists from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary.

Employment of Roma was the topic of a meeting of representatives of companies from Eastern Slovakia and non-profit organizations in Košice (Eastern Slovakia). The event, prepared by the Pontis Foundation, called the Roma a chance for the labour market in the regions.
“We are confronted with a growing demand for employing Roma from excluded communities, due to the lack of low-skilled labour in the market” said Pontis Foundation program manager Beáta Fekiačová. The aim of the meeting was to present a set of steps for companies that have chosen to employ marginalized Roma or want to resolve the obstacles they have.

A further twist on the fate of the 100 Roma who were evacuated following a fire in their housing estate and who are now lodged in a cinema. The city council needs to vote on funds to buy container housing as an “interim” solution, and meanwhile, children are returning to school after their spring break.

The Roma Osada (settlement) in the village of Kolačkov, in North Eastern Slovakia is threatened by a landslide as the hillslope above it is slipping. The Roma Plenipotentiary Ábelom Ravasz is negotiating a land swap with the commune, but, as this process is lengthy, is asking for a temporary agreement to be found. He stated: “By mutual agreement with the municipality, we have selected the land at the beginning of the municipality, as we want to prevent the segregation of the Roma, but since the situation is critical and needs to be solved quickly, the land should be used for the temporary housing.”
Let’s see and let’s hope there is no landslide and victims in the meantime.

108 Roma lost their homes after a fire gutter a housing estate in Matejovce, in the Poprad region on February 22nd. The Roma were initially housed in a school but have now been moved to a cinema. There is no permanent situation in sight, and this at a time where the weather is extremely bad.

A Photo exhibition on Vlach Roma women is opening in Bratislava. There are a few problems with the presentation and with the text which mentions a lot “nomadic” Roma. Which Vlach were not really until they were freed from slavery in the 1860’s

The appeal trial of three Slovakian Roma, accused of a series of frauds in Poland against older people, has now come to an end. The accused were defrauding elderly people on claims of urgent need of money for health reasons.
They risk several years behind bars.

Martin Kotleba, the extreme rightist party leader in Slovakia is trying to stop the affirmative action program for Roma by proposing an amendment to the anti-discrimination law.
Let’s hope he fails.

The European Commissioner for Justice and Consumer Protection, Věra Jourová is concerned about the situation of Roma pupils in Slovakia. She said it is inconceivable that discrimination and segregation of Roma children and pupils is currently taking place in the heart of Europe.
She is right!

A Slovak NGO is launching a campaign to fight against discrimination and for integration. They are trying to point at positive examples of young Roma who, with the help of the NGO’s donors will develop their talents and become positive examples.

The Slovak Interior minister Kalinak lost his gamble. The could not pass his controversial law to collect data on “Roma criminality”.
Nevertheless, his focus on criminality actually has led to extremely negative proposals in Slovakia.

According to Zuza Kumanová, an anthropologist, recent weeks in Slovakia have seen an
increase in anti-Romani rhetoric. Opposition and coalition politicians have been overtaken by proposals for coercive measures in relation to this national minority.
This article makes the point that this doesn’t help and that the measures proposed do not do anything for the integration.
