A testimony of massacres of Rroma during World War Two in Slovakia. Rroma there were often accused to collaborate with the resistance and were therefore deported or simply executed. While this was true in some cases, in others, this was simply a pretext to kill Rroma.
The testimony here is about a massacre in the village of Čierneho Balog in central Slovakia.

Smer, the party of the Slovak prime minister Fico remains popular among Rroma. A large part of the 33 Rroma mayors in the country are in Smer.
But, lately Fico has made statements at his party gathering in Prešov stating that Rroma abuse social help and claimed he would stop it, that one needs to send the police into Rroma settlements, and other repressive measures.
Bad that it too swings towards the hard line of the extreme right. Bad for the half million Rroma in that country.

The patrols of vigilantes of the extreme right party of Kotleba still patrol the trains in Slovakia in spite of the formal interdiction in parliament. The logic is simple: They buy tickets for the train, and are thus “simple” passengers …

Two large apartment blocks in Lunik IX, a settlement in Kosice in Eastern Slovakia are scheduled to be destroyed due to the dire conditions in which the building have fallen. Question remains – where will the mostly Rroma inhabitants go ?

Andrej Kiska’s address to the Slovaks for New year also had words about Rroma:

“It will be an important year in which it will be seen whether sole general response of the State to problems of socially deprived Roma citizens will only be repression.” The president also said that “in some places we need improvements, and we need a plan that specifically children gradually bring forth of ignorance and poverty”. Small regional examples that work, according to the president and, they should be scaled up to larger dimensions.

A good commentary on Fico’s statement (Lazy Rroma) and on the survey that showed that 80% of Slovaks agreed with the statement … Well, he asked for the survey and paid for it. Makes it easier to predict the outcome. Other examples are given here too.

Prime Minister Robert Fico says that in Roma settlements the next generation of unemployed is growing. According to the polling agency Polis Slovakia, this is what 79.3 percent of respondents of a survey on Rroma done on a sample of 1,275 respondents aged over 18 years in the whole country by telephone. Respondents were asked two questions.
The question: “Robert Fico at the December congress Direction said that in Roma settlements” next generation grows up that will not work. “Do you agree with this statement of his?” was answered positively by 82.4 percent of the respondents. 41.7 percent strongly agree 40.7 percent neither agree nor disagree. By contrast, 12.4% of respondents disagree, and 3.7% certainly disagrees and 8.7% rather disagree. The remaining 5.2% of respondents were unable to comment.

An eviction notice was served to the mostly Rroma population of the street to the hospital in Bánovce nad. No alternative lodgings has been provided, meaning the municipality actually violates UN Conventions.

The case of police brutality in a Rroma settlement is continuing. While the prosecution of the policemen who intervened in the Rroma settlement and beat up its residents has been stopped, the lawyers of the victims have filed another legal complaint …

An article stating that 87% of the Rroma in Slovakia are at risk of poverty. It is again based on the recent EU survey. And this one states that 87% of the interviewed Rroma in Slovakia are at risk of poverty … Small difference.
