EU Funds for Rroma are not welcome in many Slovak communes … The Interior Ministry, which administers EU funds Roma, shoes that while some municipalities already have allocated the first millions for the new programming period, it also shows that In practice, many municipalities are not interested. Even though these funds could raise the Rroma standard of living.

The proposed opening of a Rroma community centre in Poprad, a small community in Eastern Slovakia continues to raise controversy. The residents are adamantly against the centre, not per se, but because of its prime location in the community.

Slovak President Andrej Kiska says that education is the way to address the Rroma issue and have them acquire the skills and education that are required on the labour market. Nice. It would help if the country stops segregating Rroma in schools…

The interesting story of a small Slovak town which benefited a lot from the remittances of Slovaks (many of them Rroma) living in the UK. They now fear for the future of this little town following Brexit.

A Rroma fashion designer from Slovakia, Pawel Berky, won an international fashion competition, the Exalt Fashion Show and received a price in Salt Lake City this past week.

Education for the Rroma minority is failing. Rroma, who are often put into special schools are de-facto barred from higher education, be it secondary or higher. This even though it is proven, that education is the best way to prevent unemployment.

The town of Žilina in the North of Slovakia had to re-lodge Rroma who had to leave their flats due to a fire in the building. They chose to relocate them into containers, but with a caveat: Each family wanting to be re-located has to pay 200 EUR in advance (a lot of money there) and signed a rental contract. For those who had arrears, nothing will be done.

A Slovak Teacher from the village of Muránska Dlhá Lúka, in the centre of the country, Ms. Monika Podolinská, received an award fro her work with Rroma children in her village helping them overcome the initial hurdle in school and thus resulting in more Rroma going to secondary school.

The allegations against Rroma politicians in the Presov region of vote buying have not been confirmed. They were accused of having enticed Rroma to vote by bribing them with cigarette and other gifts.

A study of the impact of a movie called Sidliskovy Dream Rhythms showed that it has quite a positive impact on reducing stereotypes and prejudices against Rroma. The movie was seen by nearly 100’000 people in Slovakia and roughly a third of that in the Czech Republic.
