The Roma Problem

Another article about the Roma “problem” in Slovenia.

he mayor of Ribniška, Samo Pogorelc, said that in Ribnica, there are approximately 220 Roma who live in three illegal settlements. Half of them have registered permanent residence in Ribnica Municipality. Only two Roma are employed. Children attend kindergarten and school, but with high absenteeism, and they generally leave  school in the 6th grade. According to municipal employees, the situation is alarming.

The sad story of Roma two settlements in the South of Slovenia where less than 1’000 Roma live. According to the article, in spite of the work of the municipalities, the situation in those settlements is bad. They say that Roma destroyed the sewers and other infrastructure that has been installed, that in spite of schools being set up, not a single Roma child has completed primary school.

The blame is on the Roma in these kinds of articles. No one asks why this is happening…

The article states that the government has done nothing, and worse, is de-facto condoning. The article speaks about the Roma violence against the majority population. This is bad.

The article says “We are witnessing the escalation of Roma attacks on the majority population of Southeastern Slovenia, with the ruling coalition rejecting measures that would stop this part of the country from sliding into lawlessness for ideological reasons.”

Slovenia: Another Attack

He barely survived the attack that took place end of February and is only now returning to work. The attacker has been charged with causing serious bodily injury, but not with attempted murder.

At the request of Martina Legan Janžeković, the mayor of the Municipality of Metlika, a meeting was called on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, as citizens have recently been calling for help due to daily incidents perpetrated by Roma residents.

At the outset, the mayor explained that according to unofficial data, 450 Roma live in the Metlika municipality. She emphasized that matters should not be generalized, as not all Roma are bad, but repeated acts of violence by individuals or of individual families “cast a black light” on the entire community. She added that younger Roma have become arrogant, arrogant, insolent.

According to the mayor of the town where the attack occurred, the government does not want to talk about Roma issues. The session was also not attended by members of the commission from the left parties. They said they estimate that it is indecent and inappropriate for the Commission to serve as a platform for spreading intolerance and pointing fingers by convening the meeting.

The President of the Slovenian Republic, Nataša Pirc Musar, visited the municipality of Ribnica on Tuesday and, together with the mayor, Sam Pogorel, saw the Roma settlement Lepovče, which the municipality wants to relocate because it is located in an industrial zone. At the same time, Pirc Musar supported the efforts of the mayors of 11 municipalities in south-eastern Slovenia and Posavija to tighten certain benefits for the Roma. “If it doesn’t work with a carrot, you also need a little stick,” she said. She also said that she supports most of the proposed laws that also solve the Roma issue. The latter was submitted to the National Assembly by 11 municipalities last year, but was flatly rejected by the government coalition for being racially biased.

At the opening, Nataša Horvat, who is the representative of the Roma community in the municipal council of the Municipality of Lendava, expressed her enthusiasm for the positive changes in the settlement and in the Roma community. She emphasized the development of the settlement from its beginnings in 1961 until today, with at last a modern and safe infrastructure.
