In spite of the elections, there was space in the French press for some news on Roma…

A festival, from the 29th of April to May 1st, in Seissan will see some well-known and lesser known artists, and will feature an Egyptian singer, thus contributing to the enduring Egyptian connection of Roma. Other news are more of the usual: In Paris, residents complaining of armed Roma bands near the Camp de Mars; a fire in a camp near Paris; in Annecy, an owner tried to expulse Roma squatters; and finally in Montpellier, the new “transition camp” will soon open and a camp is being closed;

A fire in a camp in Toulouse, one in Nantes, a Rom sentenced for having stabbed another one in Montpellier, and finally a movie “la jeunesse Rom”.

Not much this week. An article in Charlie Hebdo on anti-tsiganism, a fire in a camp in Toulouse, and a fire near Paris.

Almost no news on Roma in France this week: A town in Northern France is working hard to enrol young Roma in schools; a Romni telling stories to children in Nantes; and the removal of garbage in the vicinity of a Roma squat in Marseilles.

Near a Roma camp in the north of France, there are pestilential odours, which according to Roma activists have nothing to do with the Roma and the camp. Two camps evacuated near Paris, one in Argenteuil, one in Compans, the later with a huge amount of garbage.

Not many news this week. Roma abandoned a camp near Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport; an exhibition  on Roma slavery in Romania in Nantes; the controversial “transition” village near Montpellier is ready; and a clean-up needed after the closure of a camp near Paris.

Few news on Roma, which is not surprising, as news are full of other more pressing issues.

Nevertheless, a few things: A meeting from the anti-racism league of France which still uses racist terms and is utterly confused by Roma, insisting there are Travellers, Manouches, Tsiganes, and Roma – the latter ones generally associated to Romania. Bad.

Other news are a fire in a camp ion Lille and angry neighbours of a camp in Villeneuve d’Asc in the North of France; in the southwest, a new camping site for Travellers; and finally, militants that are requesting solidarity with all refugees.

Almost no articles on Roma this week in France – a testimony of the more important news this last week.

A conference on Roma migration in Le Havre; in Montpellier, the construction of the “transition” village has started again following a decision by judges; and finally a new Roma camp in the South East.

Rather quiet week in the French press on Roma. First, the case of lead poisoning in a camp near Paris. The levels found in the children’s blood is worrisome. Then, two fires near Paris: One in a camp, one in a squat. Finally, also near Paris, a mayor asks the state for funding having seen the Roma population double recently in his commune. In Montpellier, in the South, an attempt to stop the construction of an “insertion village” has been rebutted by the court.

Four young musicians from the Roma settlement of Nadezhda in Sliven will play in the Pierre Boulez Hall of the Paris Philharmonic on February 26. They are invited to take part in a classical concert of 120 young people from 27 countries as part of the DEMOS project of one of the largest philharmonics in the world, which provides a stage for children from social groups with difficult access to culture and education.

Many articles this week in France on Roma, but in fact, only three stories: In Montpellier, future neighbours of a “transition” camp blocked the worksite, and the prefect who created this issue by closing many other camps talks about “solidarity”. In the Southeast, after Roma left a camp and left tons of garbage, an appeal to clean up. Finally, in Bordeaux, a controverse as to whether there is an increase or a decrease of slums.

A new Book in France

A new Book in France

Last, a book for children featuring a young Romni – Luludja (sic. Normally, in Romanes, the first name would be Luludji [flower] not in plural) – but also strengthening the stereotypes. Clearly she comes from Romania (all Roma are from there for the French) in search for a better  live, lands in camps etc.

Sometimes, these books are counterproductive.

Not much this week, which in itself is good. The music festival “Welcome en Tsiganie” celebrates its 15th upcoming edition, although frankly, it also perpetuates some clichés about Roma. Other than that, a peasant angry at Roma for littering his field near Paris; in the South, a violent fight between 4 Kosovo Roma; also in the South, a mayor tries to hinder Roma from setting up new camps by mobilising hunters (yes!); in Grenoble, another squat; and finally, in the north, 3 Roma arrested for suspected stealing of metal from cemeteries have been freed.

Pretty usual week in France on Roma. Still several articles about the new “transition village”, i.e. new Roma camp now that the others have been forcefully closed in Montpellier. Near Paris, a fire raged in a camp. In Grenoble, the mayor wants to prevent a new Roma camp after the large fire that spread to industrial buildings. In the North, a commune thinks it has done enough, and the police catches a gang of metal thieves operating in cemmetaries.

Fairly quiet in the French news this week on Roma. An article on the future “transition” camp for Roma near Montpellier which prompted many protests; a fire in Nantes near a Roma camp; an expulsion request of 4 families in Villeneuve d’Asc; and the camp at the end of the Roissy runway near Paris opens again – this clearly showing it would be simpler to lodge those Roma rather than just displace them.

More news this week on Roma, but again, mostly on Montpellier where a large Roma camp will be closed in March and replaced by a temporary camp. Future neighbours of this camp are vehemently protesting and the mayor of the commune where it will be located is saying that people will get killed.

Other news are more of the same. A camp re-opens in the South of France; a camp burns down near Paris; neighbours of a Roma camp near Paris convince the mayor to close a camp; and finally, one of the oldest insertion villages in France, in the northern town of Roubaix, closes.

Montpellier makes the headline this week. The city is dismantling Roma camps, and is setting aside a 10 ha site to relodge part of the Roma, resulting in protests from the neighbours of the selected land. They should better find a permanent solution rather than these idiotic measures.

Other news: A new camp in the Rhine valley in N Village-Neuf; a new squat in the former Orange building near Paris; and the usual criminal fact with two young Roma arrested near Nantes for theft.

Very few news on Roma this week in France (always a good thing). First, a report on racism against Roma in France and worrying statistics. A theatre play in the South of France. A comic strip on an Ursari family who comes to France. More political, Roma in Ivry, near Paris, are protesting in front of the Prefecture. And finally, a clean-up operation on the site of a former Roma camp near Paris.
