Not many news this week on Roma in France. Doesn’t really mean the expulsion policies are stopped, far from that. In the Lille region, in the North, several camps were closed. The press is now asking and what next? Maybe, they should have asked that before. Still in Lille, there seems to be progress on the integration of Roma, but the paper claims it is “complicated”. Activists are going to court against the expulsions of Roma EU citizen following the camp closures. Near Paris, the commune has finally relented and accepted to provide water to a Roma camp. Finally, In Nantes, Roma are going to court because of an expulsion that did not provide alternate lodgings.

The French news on Roma this week were dominated with the appeal of a catholic priest, Father Arthur Hervet to the French president Macron to ask for the closure of camps to stop and to respect the rights of the Roma and especially the children. The prefect of the North promptly denounced the “untruths” of Father Arthur’s statements on children even though it is well known that the State doesn’t respect its own laws.
In Western France, the Green party denounced the closure of camps; near Bordeaux, a camp was denied water in the midst of the heat wave; near Grenoble, a young Rom burnt himself badly while trying to set a car on fire; and near Paris, in Ivry, two camps were closed.

The usual type of news in France this week … Evacuation of a large Roma camp in Western France in Nantes. Caravans were taken away by the police, leaving the Roma without any lodgings. The Roma blocked a road as a protest. In Lille, in the North of France, Roma are between inclusion and exclusion, a camp is closed, and in Roubaix, a bit further, a squat was evacuated. Worst part, a Gadžo was condemned to 8 years of jail for having abused Roma children. In Meulin, near Paris, Roma can still stay in a former hospital and their neighbours are not happy. Still near Paris, in Périgny, a camp was closed. Finally, near Lyon, the insertion village of Saint-Genis-les-Ollières will be getting closed.

A French politician from Marine Le Pen’s extreme right party “Rassemblement National” – formerly the Front National – has published a video of himself in front of a Roma camp claiming success in his fight so that at long last “Marseilles finally becomes Marseille again”.
Other news are more usual. A camp closed and a few families re-housed in Champs-sur-Marne near Paris; the fate of squatters in Melun-Vaux-le-Pénil will be fixed this week; a family of Roma is housed in a temporary housing site in the North; and in Toulouse, the city ponders what to do after having evacuated a camp.

The usual lot of news in France this week: A few Roma near Paris were re-lodged in social housing, while in another suburb, the authorities walled an abandoned house for fear it could be squatted. In the North, a camp has not been growing, meaning that the future insertion centre will not need to grow either. Also in the North, a camp was set on fire and its residents lodged a complaint with the police. In the Western part of the country, a camp in La Riche will be closed before the winter. Also in the Western part of the country, some Roma will be re-lodged. In Saint Etienne, in the centre, three Roma men who had broken into an abandoned house and were arrested were relaxed. In Grenoble, Roma who were the victims of a criminal fire are being relodged in a sport centre, while others were expulsed from a squat. In Marseilles, a squat will be closed, and people will not be re-lodged. In Montpellier, French Gitans are protesting against a fure camp for Roma.

Also in the Western part of the country, some Roma will be re-lodged. In Saint Etienne, in the centre, three Roma men who had broken into an abandoned house and were arrested were relaxed. In Grenoble, Roma who were the victims of a criminal fire are being relodged in a sport centre, while others were expulsed from a squat. In Marseilles, a squat will be closed, and people will not be re-lodged. In Montpellier, French Gitans are protesting against a fure camp for Roma.

The usual litany of expulsions and protests in France this week. In Triel sur Seine, near Paris, the last camp was closed. In le Vesinet, near Paris, the old Somalian Embassy is being squatted by Roma. In Périgny and in Bussy Saint Georges, both near Paris, as well as in La Riche, in Western France and in Nice, in the South camps were closed. In Grenoble, a manifestation for the Roma was held. Finally, as usual, Breizh Info – a definitively xenophobic website is showcasing the case of two Roma burglars in Western France.

Bad news this week… A Roma camp near Grenoble was burnt down. It was a criminal act. Several NGOs are accusing the state of non-assistance of people in danger. Near Paris, in Triel sur Seine, a camp was closed, and several Roam were arrested following a fight. In Thorigny sur Marne, the mayor is trying to resolve the case of a squat. In Saint Etienne, in the Centre of France, Roma are in court for having broken into a derelict building for lodging. In Nice, in the south, a weird story of two children abducted by their own family. In Saint Thibaut, an illegal dump was cleaned out. In the North, a project for the insertion of Roma is encountering opposition, and in Angers, a new house is used to lodge Roma from a camp that was closed recently.
