Charlie Hebdo …

Quite a bit of critique for Charlie Hebdo who published a cartoon of Simona Halep likening her to scrap metal collectors, a job which in France is assimilated to Roma.
By the way, the outrage is not about the racist portraying of Roma – it is about associating Simona Halep and thus Romanians to Roma… No further commentaries.

The news this week in France are dominated by criminality. A ring of Bulgarian Roma was arrested near Toulouse for having exploited people for mendicity, allegedly holding them like slaves and even torturing them. Bad indeed. Near Paris, other Roma are being investigated for the theft of over a million Euros of smartphones. Finally, a large fight in a Roma camp in Triel sur Seine resulted in 6 arrestations.
Then, in Nice, a rightist politician wants to forbid begging. This has never been a solution and is totally ineffective. This is pure demagogism.
The rest of the news are the usual ones: In the North, some land is being set aside for Roma; in Tours, some Bulgarian Roma camping by the river will be expulsed; and near Paris, Roma are squatting an empty house, much to the anger of neighbours.

Lots of cultural events this week in France on Roma – and very little negative news. First, a projection of a movie on a Roma camp in Nantes. The movie is presented on the site of that former site, before it is developed. Projection of another movie on Roma in Arles. The exhibition “Mondes Tsiganes” in Paris, with many photographs. That exhibition is not in the right place (in the museum of migration) and is definitively fuelling clichés. Concert of a Slovakian Roma group in the South of France. Then the more usual news: A fire in a camp in Montreuil; a new squat of a empty house near Paris; and, surprise, a positive experiment in Marseilles, where Roma are lodged in apartments …

Frankfurt: Eviction

Another article on the closure of a migrant’s camp near the Frankfurt’s railway station. Many of its residents were Romanian Roma. As in France, no alternative was provided to the people, and they will land back on the streets.

Ukraine: Follow Up

The lawyer defending the Roma victims of an attack on a camp in the Kharkiv region was brutally attacked. And the leader of the attacker was none other than a local prosecutor. Apparently, the attackers were not even masked and there is CCTV coverage.
Bad.
Also bad that the newspaper used the picture of a Roma shantytown from Paris. It is the camp of the petite ceinture – on the tracks of a disused train line.

Is it a trend? Or is it a change? The news this week on Roma in France are definitively different. Education, about a Romni in Montreuil fighting for the enrolment of Roma children in school; help, with a story of students of a prestigious French university (Science Po) devoting time to Roma in Poitiers; a Roma manifestation in Nice about the living conditions in Romania; a movie about a Roma family; an integration centre is being discussed in the North of France and one opened near Paris in Ivry; and then the usual news, a fire in a camp in the North, and a camp closure near Paris.
Finally, racism in France with Moslems and Roma coming on the top of the league … A depressing pattern in Europe.

A socialist mayor of the North of France is calling for a manifestation to protest the illegal camps of Travellers (Mostly Roma – French Manouches, Lovara and Kalderaša). In Marseilles, the president of the largest soccer club invites 20 Roma children to watch a soccer game. Near Marseilles, the presentation of a book on Roma and their integration will take place on the 24th of May. Another article on the controversial exhibition in Paris – full of praise thereof, unfortunately. Finally, yet another camp is going to be closed.

In Nice, a family with three kids is being thrown out onto the street as the place they live on has been sold. In Western France, in Angers, Roma from a camp fear that they will be expulsed. Near Paris, in Melun, the Roma who had been lodged in a former hospital are being threatened with expulsion. In Ablon-Vigneux, residents are demanding the closure of a camp. In Eastern France, in Strasbourg, a new idea to fight against shantytown is being investigated. In the North, in Roubaix, finally, the interview of a doctor who serves the poor Roma from the city.

As usual … A short presentation of Roma by l’Express mixes a few correct facts (Indian origins) with total BS, assimilating the Roma as a whole to the Vlach Roma from Romania, stating that they starting arriving in Europe in the 1980’s (in fact they arrived about 80 years earlier) etc…

Few news this week on Roma in France. The main one is the one of a video which is a fake and purportedly shows a Rom aggressing a bus driver in the North of France before being beaten up. The video was shared over 240’000 times! Near Paris, a drunken mayor was arrested after having threatened Roma. He was drink, wore a Japanese sword and had a gun with him.
The rest of the news are more like the usual ones: A camp on Triel sur Seine will be dismantled, the illegal dump attributed in part to Roma in the Yvelines is still a hot topic, and also near Paris, a fight between Roma has one of them landing in a hospital.

Paris: Exhibition

Another article on the photography exhibition in Paris called “Mondes Tsiganes – La Fabrique des Images” in the museum for migration.The exhibition aims at showing how stereotypes were created via photography.
BUT: The name “Tsigane” as well as the place “Immigration” museum are not the right ones. And the Press now speaks of “Travellers”…
