Well, when there is other news, such as the French elections, Roma vanish from the media. Except in some rightist paper such as the notorious Breizh info.

Besides the title about wasting money on Roma, France has spent a huge amount of money not integrating around 20’000 Roma over the last 20 years. Integration would have been by now much cheaper.

Some more positive news in France this week (at least some …). An association called Rencont’Rom (A French play on rencontres – meetings, and Roma) was funded by the Occitanie Region as part of a project for a more inclusive region. In Grenoble, in the Apls, an Exhibition is trying to counter the stereotypes. The rest is more of the usual. A fire in a Roma camp in Montpellier is the South was probably a criminal act; in Toulouse, tons of garbage on the site of a former Roma camp is partly attributed to them; and finally, in Nantes, in Western France, a tribunal judged the construction of a site for Roma to be illegal.

A few news this week about Roma in France: a 26 year old man has been arrested for the murder of a pregnant Romni in Haute Savoie, close to Geneva. The crime seems to have been racially motivated. Other news are about EU Funds for the integration of Roma and the closure of a camp in Strasbourg.

Not much this week in France about Roma. There were enough other themes this week …

An association helping Roma to access schools in the Lyon region; a relocation in better condition for a Roma camp in Strasbourg; and the closure of a camp near Paris.

Unfortunately, the usual news in France about Roma this week. A so-called Transition village near Montpellier in the South of France closed after two years. The fate of the 165 Roma who still were there is uncertain. Other news: Near Nantes, a landowner is trying to get rid of a Roma camp on his lands by himself; another camp near Paris is increasing in size; and near Marseille, a fire in a camp.

Several news about the 8th of April in the French press. One is interesting. A French book about Johann Trollmann, the Sinto boxer who won the German heavyweight title in 1933 but was then stripped of the title. Here, no mention about Sinti …

The rest of the news are the usual ones: A camp near Strasbourg will be closed and a fire in a camp in Toulouse.

An Article about a Romni

An Article about a Romni

A portrait of a young Romni in the Ukraine. She completed her studies. But what is written about Roma in this article is just terrible.

The author has obviously no idea what he (or she) is talking about. In addition, the authors puts in multiple stereotypes. Really bad journalism but unfortunately typical of what one finds in the French press.

Not much, but nothing good this week in the French press about Roma. An association that is being accused of preventing the closure of a Roma camp has been denied subsidies; a large police action against drug dealers and burglars in Nantes, focusing on a Roma camp; and near Toulouse, the closure of two illegal camps.

The usual unfortunate news: A camp near Paris that existed since 2017 has been closed this week, leaving roughly 200 people of which 90 children without a roof; there was a large police action in another camp on the outskirts of Paris; a festival of Roma culture in the South West; and finally, the extreme rightist Breizh info reports on the cancellation of an insertion village near Nantes in Western France.

On a Murder

On a Murder

Her name was Angela Rostas, she was Romni and lived with her husband in a caravan on isolated land in Chênex, in France. She was 40 years old, the mother of three daughters and seven months pregnant. On February 22, she was shot and killed. That day, around 5 p.m., “she heard noises outside her mobile home. Going out to see what it was, she was shot on her doorstep and died,” says the French organization Voix des Roms in a press release, which also indicates having filed a complaint the week passed.

Roma associations suspect a racist murder.

Not much this week in France about Roma: Basically several articles on the movie “Comme un fils” [like a son] from the French director Nicola Boukhrief featuring the actor Vincent Lindon in the role of a depressive teacher saved by a young rom.

Other news is the upcoming eviction of a camp in the South East of France.

The French television channel TF1 showed the movide “A bras Ouvert”, a movie that came out in 2017 and immediately created a controversy as it displayed many racist clichés about Roma. Bad Idea, and bad movie.

Other news in France are more of the usual ones: A camp was closed near Fréjus in the south of France; another one in Angers in Western France; In Angers, they opened up a temporary insertion site; and finally a reportage in Western France on a site opened for Roma.

The usual litany, unfortunately. In Marseilles, the State has presented a plan to integrate the ca. 900 Roma who live in camps through employment. About time… In Marseilles too, the planned insertion village will not be built, and another camp will be closed. Finally, two young Romnja are in court near Paris for having aggressed the wife of a policeman (not very smart from them).

The usual. In Marseilles, a proposed so-called “Insertion village” project, a place where Roma can settle in and integrate, has been abandoned under pressure from the neighbours. Bad. In Bordeaux, a Roma camp was vacated the day before its official expulsion. Near Paris, Roma returned in a camp following a large fire.

A mayor in France made racist comments about Roma on a WhatsApp group, and 2 years later, they surfaced. He pleads that he was simply “clumsy”. A bit easy to try to get away from these comments. Near Paris, a town was condemned for having refused to enroll Roma children in schools. That is good. In February 2023, the residents from a town near Paris expulsed Roma from a camp. A formal complaint was lodged, but French Justice, in those cases seems reluctant to do anything. Near Marseilles, the installation of an “insertion village” provokes protests from residents. Finally, Roma who fled their cam following a fire have returned.
