Not much this week on France and Roma. A rumour about people being abducted and of a traffic of human organs involving Roma spread through France. Las time such a rumour occurred, Roma were victims of attacks. Other than that, three camps closed near Paris, one in Lyon, and in Montpellier, apparently some success at integration.

Pretty usual week in France on Roma. An exhibition on the Romanian slavery of Roma in Nantes; near Paris, Roma are getting support for them to stay in a camp near Bobigny from their neighbours, an exception; also near Paris, a camp is evacuated; in Lyon, Roma finally get water; two camps closed in the South of France; and finally, several Roma were condemned for having defrauded immigration candidates from the East.

Not many news this week about Roma in France, which is not surprising, as there are more pressing subjects in France right now such as the strike in the oil refineries which are causing real problems …

First a reportage in a Roma camp on Paris’ outskirts and with the people helping the residents. Then, an article about ca. 10’000 children who are not enrolled in schools in France, in spite of the law requiring it. This led some Roma last week to sure mayors of towns who refused to enrol their children. Finally, the announcement of a festival in Toulouse.

More news in France on Roma this week. First, a reportage on television about the anti-Roma riots in 2019 that started on rumours that Roma were stealing children. The ones who started the rumours were identified but not condemned. Sad. Near Paris, several Roma families are suing mayors for refusing to enrol Roma children in classes, something that is mandatory and guaranteed by the law. In Bobigny, near Paris, residents who had lobbied to have a camp closed as it was on private land are now defending the new camp on communal grounds. In Lyon, a camp has been growing. In Aubagne, in the South, a camp will be closed, and in Marseilles, neighbours of a squat are fed up.

A nice article on Anina Ciuciu, a young Romanian Romni who lived in a Roma camp but is meanwhile a lawyer who fights for the right to education. Other news are more of the usual kind, unfortunately. Near Paris, parents are demanding the scolarisation of 9 Roma children; Near Nantes, Roma left a camp just to move a bit further; in Toulouse, neighbours of a camp have had enough of it; and the prefect of the Herault department, who has become known for closing Roma camps is caught up in a racist controversy following a tweet that he then subsequently deleted.

Not much this week in France on Roma. A fight in a Roma camp near Lyon, a “Nuit Tzigane” showing that the French still have not understood the correct terminology, and politicians freed from accusations of racial hatred, as the prosecution took too long …

Not much this week in France regarding Roma. A manifestation in Strasbourg for the people living in a camp there, and a justice story where a father who “bought” two minor girls in former Yugoslavia was condemned. This latter story adds fuel to the stereotype that Roma buy their women and sell their daughters, something that only Vlach Roma do as a result of the slavery in Romanian lands.

A collective of mothers is suing mayors in France for refusing to register Roma children to school, this in spite of the fact that they are legally obliged to do so. This is good, as this refusal of registration effectively amounts to racism. Another article highlights the need of school material for children, something out of reach for many poor children, and not only Roma. No week in France without a criminal case involving Roma in the press, and as usual, the undertones that all Roma are criminal.

An article on an exhibition of an Italian photographer on the ghetto of Stolipinovo in Bulgaria highlights a journalist ignorance. He thinks that Turkish speaker in Stolipinovo are Turcs. They are not, simply Roma who nowadays only speak old Turkish. Finally, an article on the Biennale in Venice with a long mention of Malgorzata Mirga-Tas.

An exhibition of an Italian photographer in Perpignan on a reportage of the Stolipinovo Mahala (Roma quarter) in Plovidiv. One this is sure, there are no Gitans there … The French seem totally impervious in understanding what Roma, Gitans, Manouches, Sinti actually means. By the way also, Stolipinovo is not the largest Roma settlement. That is most probably the Šutka near Skopje.

Other news are the usual ones: A camp closure in Nice; protests against illegal buildings near Montpellier; racism near Bordeaux; and a mess left over after a closure near Paris.

Not much news on Roma this last week in France. The usual ones, a camp vacated near Paris in Vaujours; another one that was abandoned in Livry, also near Paris, leaving a lot of garbage; a camp that will be closed near Nice; and finally in Toulouse, an expulsion of a squat of minors.

Unfortunately, more news on Roma this week in France. Near Nantes, Romanian Roma families who were expulsed twice in 24 hours on July 6 and 7th have finally found a place where they can stay. The town of Rezé together with the city of Nantes has set a location aside where the Roma can put up their camp. Also In Nantes, Roma lost everything last week in a fire and the commune is appealing for help. Other news are a fire in a garbage dump in a Roma camp in Marseilles; a squat closed near Paris; and finally, two young Roma arrested near Paris for burglary in several houses.

After a week without news on Roma in France, they are back in the news. An interview and overview of the travels of a French Gitan in Europe to preserve the memory of those who were killed during the Holocaust. A book and a movie will apparently follow. Other than that, a major fire started in Nantes, in Western France,  in the vicinity of a Roma camp. Apparently, several caravans were burnt, and the Roma were evacuated. Finally, a new camp in the South East will be closed, as it is situated in a forest that could easily burn.

Not much this week in France. An article with all stereotypes on Roma on the Cote d’Azur, a camp closed near Paris, and of course the consequence thereof, a new camp being established.

In all those years, for 15 to 20 thousand Roma living in camps, they could have found a better solution …

Racism in France

Really? 38% of French people think that “Islam is a threat to the identity of France” (compared to 44.7% in 2019) or even 45% think that “the Roma live mainly from theft and trafficking” (48 .2% in 2019).

And 37% think that “Jews have a special relationship with money”, up from two years ago (34.1%).

Even if for Roma and Moslems the numbers are better than last year, this statistic is scary.

Not much, but always the same, which is depressing. A camp closed in the north, and as usual, no solution found for its inhabitants; another one closed in Alsace and one in the west in Nantes; and in the dSouth, residents protest against a Roma camp.

More news this week on Roma, unfortunately. Complaints about a Roma camp near Paris; a camp evacuated near Lyon; the aftermath of a fire in a camp near Marseilles and the tricky question of the relocation of people; also in Marseilles, a squat has been closed; a new site for Roma near Nantes; a judgement in Lille, in the North, where a camp will be closed and the action of associations alarmed at the closure of camps.
