Germany: Exhibition

The exhibition “Racial Diagnosis: Gypsies” commemorates the systematic persecution and extermination of Sinti and Roma during the Nazi era. It was opened by the President of the North Rhein Westfalen State Parliament, André Kuper, and the first chairman of the State Association of German Sinti and Roma NRW, Roman Franz.

Roma, the UN and the Roma Holocaust

Christian Pfeil (80) from Trier, Germany will speak at the United Nations on Friday, January 26th, on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day. He was born in a concentration camp and many members of his family were murdered in Auschwitz. Christian Pfeil has been committed to coming to terms with history for years. With his speech at the UN he wants to draw attention to the increasing anti-Semitism and the situation of the Sinti and Roma in the Balkan states.

79 years after the Holocaust and Genocide, the German Catholic Church indicated they want wants to deal with its failure in the Genocide of the Sinti and Roma.

Scholtz on AfD

The AfD (or at least several of its members and allied groups) is reported to have drafted a relocation plan for citizen of non-German origins. Olaf Scholtz, the German Chancellor has slammed this plan that reminds of the Nazis’ racial laws. The definition of non-German raises questions for Roma and Jews alike.

Heidelberg: Exhibition

An exhibition on art by Roma opened in the Heidelberg town hall foyer on December 5th. It was created as part of an art support program for members of the minority. One of the artist is Natalie Tomenko shown here in front of her series of pictures “When the darkness came”.

Bayreuth and Roma

Tajsa Award

Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, a Polish-Romani artist, has won the prestigious Tajsa Prize Cultural Heritage Prize 2023 for her significant contribution to Roma cultural heritage. The award ceremony took place on 30 November at Berlin’s Maxim Gorki Theater and was organized by the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC).

The European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC) has announced the five finalists for the prestigious Tajsa Roma Cultural Heritage Prize 2023, which honours outstanding individuals who are leaders in the contemporary Roma cultural movement. The award ceremony will take place on 30 November 2023 at 19:00 and will be broadcast online from the Gorki Theatre in Berlin.

Hamburg: Memorial

The Hamburg Sinti Association has erected a memorial in the cemetery at Diebsteich in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. It will be ceremoniously inaugurated on Sunday.

Ilona Lagrene

Die Sintiza and civil right activist Ilona Lagrene has died at 73.

Romani Rose, chairman of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, praised her for her “tireless education” about the minority’s history of persecution. For her it was never about “transferring blame”, but rather about “passing on knowledge”.

Berlin and the Memorial

The family of the artist Dani Karavan, the creator of the Memorial for the Sinti and Roma victims of the Genocide is threatening legal action if the memorial is changed by the planned S-Bahn tunnel. The government remains divided on the issue.

Tajsa Prize

The Tajsa prize will be awarded to Franciska Farkas and Horvá Kristóf “Színész Bob
(aka “Actor Bob”), both award-winning actors from Budapest, are notable for their contributions to the world of theater, film, poetry, and talent education.
The Jury has nominated them together for their outstanding performance in the movie Three Thousand Numbered Pieces (2022) “a political, cruel and original film spiced with dark humour, which makes an urgently needed and impactful statement against injustice, prejudice, discrimination and racism against the Roma, the biggest European minority”.

The Central Council of German Sinti and Roma issued a statement saying that they are deeply concerned by the increase of antisemitism and crimes and attacks against Jews in Germany.

Sinti in Germany

Romani Rose commented in detail about the conflict between the Heidelberg-based Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and the federal association founded two years ago. The dispute led to the planned state treaty and the financing of the conversion and new construction of the Documentation Centre for German Sinti and Roma being put on hold. Romani Rose calls on the federal government to face up to its responsibilities and support the Central Council’s commitment rather than blocking it.
