It seems that things are slowly moving in Rome: Following discussions in the city council, there is a plan now to slowly move towards the closure of the Rroma camps that were a real shame for the city (and a real source of corruption). The local Rroma organisations have been greeting this progress all the while remaining cautious…

17 people will be put on trial for corruption in the case of the contracts awarded for several camps for Rroma around Rome.

The case of the new Roma camp in the North of Rome, a camp that is being pushed by the new Mayor from the five Star movement in spite of earlier promises, landed in court. Several organisations are claiming there is corruption behind it, and that the Italian state violated the master agreement with the EU concerning Rroma integration.
We hope they succeed!

Attacked because his wife is “the gypsy woman who is on television”, Paul Bitch Ninchi, president of Upre Rome and husband of Dijana Pavlovic, actress and Roma activist, had to to undergo surgery after an injury to his left ear drum.

Italian Rroma leaders have formally asked the EU to block 16 Mio EUR of funds earmarked for the Campania Region specifically for the integration of Rroma. And one knows what these funds were used for in the past: for camps, and for corruption …

Paolo Cagna Ninchi, the president of the association Upre Rom, was aggressed and beaten up in Milan, and his wife was also insulted.

As we already reported, the closure by the city of Rome of its centre for migrants in the via Amarilli is actually a de-facto eviction. The evicted Rroma were not offered any alternative lodging and are now camping outside.

The City of Rome recently closed a centre which mostly lodged Rroma. According to local NGOs, this was more an eviction rather than a closure, as many of the people were not relocated in other centres.
The NGOs and the European Roma Right Centre are accusing the city to violate the human rights of the Rroma as well as not fulfilling their obligations according to European Laws.

An interesting article about Rroma in Italy, speaking about the Abbruzzesi – an autochthonous local Rroma group that are the descendants of the first Rroma who arrived there in the early 15th century, the more recent Sinti, and the Rroma from former Yugoslavia. They also speak about the camps and the fact that Rroma are forced to live in such camps, often against their will.

17 businessmen and politicians are currently being indicted in conjunctions with maintenance and building of Rroma camps around the Italian capital…
So that is the reason why these camps still exist …

A new book “the good little virgin of via Ormea” by Algerian born author Amara Lakhous details the tensions between Rroma and the general population in the Italian city of Turin. An young Italian girl is accusing two Rroma boys of rape and a journalist strives to find out the truth.

Virginia Raggi, the new Five Stars mayor of Rome is getting more and more flak on her administration of the city and amongst this, about the Rroma camps. In spite of her promises, she continues the previous administration’s policy and continues to finance the camps, even planning to expand them.
For this, she is being criticised by the Rroma roganisations.

The new 5 Stars Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, had promised to close the Rroma camps that surround the capital and which are financed by the city (with lots of corruption …).
Instead, the city has just put out a new tender for a new camp to be built for 12 Mio Euro.
