Ireland and Travellers

An Irish genetical study recently showed that Travellers, while of Irish origins, are a separate group following several centuries of de-facto separation.
And very shortly thereafter, the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and the Dail (Parliament) recognise them as an ethnic group.
GOOD!

P.S. Switzerland please take heed… After 600 years in the country, Rroma are still not recognised as a minority.

News this week seem to be dominated by a fire in a Rroma camp in the North of Paris variously note as being Porte de Clignancourt or Porte de la Chapelle, luckily without victims but with quite a bit of damages. The displaced Rroma are concerned due to lack of alternatives.
The other set of news is from the North of France, with additional aggressions reported near the Deûle canal in Lille, with other women reported having been aggressed by Rroma men. As a result, the city of Lille is requesting the closure of a nearby Rroma camp.
These news are really bad and perpetuate a criminal view of Rroma.

A judge stroke down the arrest of 4 Rromnja during a raid in Palermo on a Rroma camp. The women were separated from their husband and children and sent to Rome for deportation. Even though they had been in Italy for more than 20 years and two of them were born there…

A bit of an outcry in Austria after a giant of the food industry stated it wanted to open a meat factory for processing pork on the site of a former Nazi camp where Rroma and Jews were interned. In addition, the former owners of the land claimed they were never received any compensation for the land that was seized.

Not that many news this week either on the Rroma camps. A to start, two news that are more positive. Rezé, a town in Western France is setting space aside for Rroma and in the South West, a delegation went to Strasbourg to see how they dealt with Rroma, as it is better there. On the other hand, a insertion village in Saint Open, near Paris is being closed; a fire in a squat near Paris forced ca. 80 Rroma on the street; a new squat in the North; and finally a really bad news with a young women aggressed in the North by 5 or 6 young Rroma. Luckily, she could defend herself and flee.
