Not much about Roma this week in France. Two articles about the expulsion of 50 Roma due to the Paralympics, their camp being on the trade of a competition. A judge has nevertheless put conditions on this expulsion. In Noisy-le-Sec, the evacuation of a camp has been delayed, due to an epidemic situation. Finally, two Romnja have been caught in a burglary and immediately judged.

Leeds: The Children are Back

Published by:

The children whose removal prompted the start of the riots are back with their family. The whole story is a bit more complex than at first sight: The children were placed with relatives several months ago, following an unexplained skull fracture of the youngest baby in the family. They cannot be with their parents until the toddler’s case has been judged and resolved, hence their placement with relatives.

Leeds and the Cause of the Riots

Two more articles on the root cause of the riots in Leeds: The removal of children from a Roma family while the parents were not there.

Sweden, Roma, and Organisations

Published by:

The Swedish Institute for Language and Folklore ISOF has filed a criminal complaint for the first time.

Unit manager Ester Enhsmyr wrote to Radio Romano that it concerns the Sinti and Roma Council in Umeå, which has submitted deficient accounts of contributions of SEK 100,000 thousand (roughly 8’600 euros).

Riots in Leeds

Published by:

There has been a large riot in Leeds, UK, with police cars overturned, a bus set afire, and reports of looting and other property damages.

Why did they occur: Apparently, a family with 5 children had a toddler admitted in hospital with head injuries. Social Services decided immediately to take over all 5 children while the parents were away working. This resulted in a clash, with police intervention, and the whole situation escalated rapidly.

There is so far no official statement on this, and the protagonists are reported to be of Romanian origins. Romanians on social media of course said these were Roma, which is probable.

Really bad.

French Chronicle …

A reportage in a Roma camp near Marseilles in the South of France. These are not necessarily productive, as they reinforce many stereotypes which are not valid for all Roma. Near Paris, a camp was closed due to the Olympic games, and it seems from another reportage, that besides Roma, others are also displaced due to the Olympics. Finally, an interview with the mayor of a suburb from Nates about an integration camp there.

Swedish Kale

Published by:

More and more of Sweden’s Finnish Roma, who are also called Kalé Roma, are moving to Finland, even though many have grown up in Sweden and spend their lives here. Above all, it is the fear of increasing gang crime but also poorer educational opportunities in Sweden that make the neighboring country attractive.

French Chronicle …

More news this week on Roma in France, and not all good. First, a man shot and wounded several Roma in a camp near Montpellier. Most probably another racist attack. In Marseilles, three Roma were wounded in a knife attack following a collision. The motive there is unclear.  In Nantes, in Western France, planning has started for the closure of a large Roma camp.  Then, several articles about a catalytic converter theft and traffic network which was dismantled in Romania after a theft committed in Calvados in Western France. This organized criminal group is said to have transported more than 900 catalytic converters through Roma camps in the Paris region.

Well, it has to do with the prejudices of the employers …

Google Translate Romanes

Published by:

Nice to see that google translate allows for translations in Romanes. It definitively has a bias towards Vlach Romanes, which is not the most common Romanes, but this is a good start! The choices of words on World, to think, and a few others show this bias, but on the other hand, they still use the old Romanes for “life”, which is not Vlach.

Wonder how this was compiled…

Google and Romanes

Romanes is finally in Google Translate: The biggest language expansion in history! Google added 110 new languages.

French Chronicle …

Published by:

Well, when there is other news, such as the French elections, Roma vanish from the media. Except in some rightist paper such as the notorious Breizh info.

Besides the title about wasting money on Roma, France has spent a huge amount of money not integrating around 20’000 Roma over the last 20 years. Integration would have been by now much cheaper.

Sachsenhausen Camp

Published by:

The district court in Hanau, Hesse, has refused to open a trial against a 99-year-old alleged former guard at the Sachsenhausen Nazi concentration camp for health reasons.

Too bad.

Germany and Racism

Published by:

The current German ruling coalition proposed the creation of a commission on racism. The SPD parliamentary group and its chairman Raed Saleh in particular have been a strong advocate for the project. “The Enquete Commission will be tasked with drawing up recommendations on how to strengthen social cohesion and counter anti-Semitism, racism, Islamophobia and all forms of discrimination.”

Racism against Sinti and Roma will also be included.
