Anti-Roma Racism in Germany

The first report issued by the new responsible for antigypsyism in Germany on racist acts against Roma in Germany is shocking. More than 600 cases are recorded within a year, and, what is worse, it often involves the state.

Not much at all this week in the French press on Roma. A new camp near Nantes is creating waves exasperation among the nearby residents, and of course is also used politically. Other than that, ca shootout in the North of France involving Roma apparently.

Romnja Association

Romnja of Serbian and Macedonian origins founded the first Roma Women’s Association registered in Germany. The basic postulates of the Roma Women’s Association are the strengthening of the position of Roma women in the family and society, the fight against violence, forced and early marriages, as well as domestic and sexual violence.

Berlin, the Police, and Roma

A lecture by a federal police officer at the federal government’s open day in Berlin last weekend sparked sharp criticism from the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and the religious policy spokesman for the Green parliamentary group, Volker Beck.

According to the Central Council and Beck, the representative of the Berlin Directorate of the Federal Police gave a public lecture in the Federal Ministry of the Interior entitled “Beware of thieves! How pickpockets use tricks and how you can successfully ruin their criminal journey.” In it, Roma are said to have been generally referred to as “large criminal families” organized into “criminal clans” that move through Europe. Other ethnic groups were also racially discriminated against: each ethnic group, North African or Polish, had “its own criminal methods”.

In Montpelier, an exhibition on the German civil right movement; in Grenoble, police intervenes against the installation of Roma in new camps, and in Nantes, a new camp opened.

Milano: Linguistic Conference

The 15th International Conference on the linguistics of the Romani language will take place on 13 and 14 September 2023, a biennial event that brings together all the specialists in this field and which is held for the first time in Italy.

Sinti Grave

Securing, preserving and renovating the Sinto grave in Osendorf, one of the very few such memorial in Germany, remains on the city of Halle (Saale)’s agenda. “This is clearly our goal – even if the city’s application for federal funding was rejected,” says Jane Unger, head of the culture department for the city of Halle (Saale). Financing options for the renovation are now being sought together with the state.

Bavaria: Aiwanger and Nazism

A controversy has been brewing in Bavaria: Aiwanger, the leader of a party in current coalition in the Bavarian government, has been linked to a manifesto, written in the 1980’s that is definitively an apology of Nazism. His brother has in between claimed he is the author and Aiwanger has “apologised”, kind of.

Disgraceful and distasteful.

The exhibition “The Path of #Sinti and #Roma” by the Hessian State Association of Sinti and Roma  in northern Hesse will be shown from Saturday, September 2, 2023 (opening from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.) until September 26, 2023.

The usual, unfortunately, this last week in France on Roma.

In Bordeaux, an article on the Podensac camp where Roma who were expulsed from another camp re-settled; A new camp in Ermenonville; in Lyon, neighbour of a new “insertion camp” are protesting against nuisances; and of course, criminality with the theft of copper in Lyon.

Germany: Clan Criminality

The Green politician Renate Künast’s move to stop using the term “clan criminality” by the North Rhine-Westphalia, a term that was heavily criticised by Roma organisations was rejected. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) told the “Bild” (Saturday edition): “You have to name problems if you want to solve them. Out of sheer fear of stigmatization, clan criminality was ignored for 30 years. We have to spoon up the soup now”.

Austria and Roma

Katharina Janoska, an Austrian Romni, made a movie about the struggle of the Roma for recognition in Austria. The production from the ORF regional studio in Burgenland can be seen on ORF 2 on Sunday, August 27 at 6:25 p.m.
