French Chronicle …

Not much this week in France on Roma. An article about a camp with miserable living conditions near Strasbourg; a new camp near Saint Nazaire in Western France; an article on the book “Ces voyageurs immobiles (Kumpania. Vivre et résister en pays gadjo)”; and finally, an article about the Arles photographic exhibition  on the Saintes Marie de la Mer pilgrimage.

Germany: Exhibition

The exhibition “The Path of #Sinti and #Roma” by the Hessian State Association of Sinti and Roma  in northern Hesse will be shown from Saturday, September 2, 2023 (opening from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.) until September 26, 2023.

The usual, unfortunately, this last week in France on Roma.

In Bordeaux, an article on the Podensac camp where Roma who were expulsed from another camp re-settled; A new camp in Ermenonville; in Lyon, neighbour of a new “insertion camp” are protesting against nuisances; and of course, criminality with the theft of copper in Lyon.

Germany: Clan Criminality

The Green politician Renate Künast’s move to stop using the term “clan criminality” by the North Rhine-Westphalia, a term that was heavily criticised by Roma organisations was rejected. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) told the “Bild” (Saturday edition): “You have to name problems if you want to solve them. Out of sheer fear of stigmatization, clan criminality was ignored for 30 years. We have to spoon up the soup now”.

Germany, Bulgaria, and Bad Journalism

An article in the sensation paper “Bild” about the Stolipino Mahala in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Parts of it are really poor, other less so. And here of course, as a title: “All want to come to Germany”.

Austria and Roma

Katharina Janoska, an Austrian Romni, made a movie about the struggle of the Roma for recognition in Austria. The production from the ORF regional studio in Burgenland can be seen on ORF 2 on Sunday, August 27 at 6:25 p.m.

Football – a First

Not only did she score the winning goal for her team, taking home the women’s world cup, but she is also the first Romni to do so. Congratulations.

And condolences, as she lost her father that week-end.

Typical news from France this week, unfortunately. Families that lost their homes during the closure of a camp South of Bordeaux have settled in worse conditions in another camp. And an uproar in Nice as a Roma family from Bosnia camps in Nice near a beach…

Dortmund Festival

The Roma culture festival “Djelem Djelem” is taking place in Dortmund for the tenth time in a row. Until September 26, 2023, visitors can get to know the culture of the Sinti and Roma through films, theatre performances, music, training and encounters. Most of the events are free of charge.

After a quiet week, back to the usual on the press coverage of Roma in France: Lots of garbage left after the closure of a camp near the Roissy airport in Paris; two camps closed near Paris; and finally, the largest Roma camp near Bordeaux will be closed shortly.
