Rather quiet week in the French press on Roma. First, the case of lead poisoning in a camp near Paris. The levels found in the children’s blood is worrisome. Then, two fires near Paris: One in a camp, one in a squat. Finally, also near Paris, a mayor asks the state for funding having seen the Roma population double recently in his commune. In Montpellier, in the South, an attempt to stop the construction of an “insertion village” has been rebutted by the court.

Bulgaria: Invited

Four young musicians from the Roma settlement of Nadezhda in Sliven will play in the Pierre Boulez Hall of the Paris Philharmonic on February 26. They are invited to take part in a classical concert of 120 young people from 27 countries as part of the DEMOS project of one of the largest philharmonics in the world, which provides a stage for children from social groups with difficult access to culture and education.

Many articles this week in France on Roma, but in fact, only three stories: In Montpellier, future neighbours of a “transition” camp blocked the worksite, and the prefect who created this issue by closing many other camps talks about “solidarity”. In the Southeast, after Roma left a camp and left tons of garbage, an appeal to clean up. Finally, in Bordeaux, a controverse as to whether there is an increase or a decrease of slums.

Thessaloniki: Evicted

Thessaloniki Appellate Court judgement of 31 January 2022 reversed the decision of the lower court not to evict Roma families from the “Tsairia” area of Thermaikos Municipality near Thessaloniki. In February 2020, following the initial trial for eviction by the Mayor of Thermaikos, Roma won a reprieve.

Let’s now see what happens.

The European Court of Human Rights accepted the application of the Roma who are facing eviction following the reversal of an earlier judgement on appeal. In fact the court asked Greece to halt the eviction and asked whether alternative lodging solutions are available.
