The French “index of tolerance” by which the state measures the tolerance towards foreigners and minorities, is fairly stable.
BUT … Roma are at the bottom of the pile. They are the least tolerated minority in France.

A mixed bag of news this week in France. First, a positive story of two young Roma in a youth communal council near Nantes, in Western France, showing that integration is possible. On the flip side, yet another fire in a Roma camp near that same city. In Lille, in the north, a medical bus is doing the rounds in Roma camps. In Paris, a prefect who seem to ignore the law entirely when he wants to expulse Roma. A festival, “Latcho Divano” aimed at furthering the dialogue between Roma and Gadže opened its doors in Marseilles. And in that same city, a weird story of an abduction of a 3 years old Roma child by his step mother.

Germany: Protests

There were protests at the airport in Baden, Germany after the deportation of 34 Roma on March 15th to Kosovo. The protests last Wednesday were aimed at further deportations this time to Serbia and Macedonia.

Some positive news, some that are not fully related to Roma, and then the usual stereotypes – this is what one could say of this week’s French Press on Roma.

On the positive side, an informal survey in Montpellier in the South of France shows that “only” 10% of the residents think that Roma cannot integrate. 53% are for the assimilation – which is not a solution. In Western France, near Nantes, an organisation is calling for a dialogue with Roma. In the North, a bus has been converted into a medical office, and is free of charges.

On the not fully related to Roma, the story of a huge illicit garbage dump 30 km from Paris. It is claimed it was started by Roma a while back, but has definitively been abused by Gadže.

On the negative side, the usual criminal stories. In Aix en Provence, 3 Roma pimps have been arrested; in the South, a traffic of children -really??? – sold into slavery to steal sounds improbable; and finally, a Romni pickpocket in the Nice airport.

Germany: Discrimination

Representatives of the Sinti and Roma have complained against discrimination on Thursday to the Berlin House of Representatives. They say that despite the action plan decided in 2013 they are still discriminated against and socially disadvantaged. This is especially the case when looking for a job or a flat, where they hardly have a chance.

Munich: Commemoration

Quite a few news in France this week. To start with, a reportage on young Roma doing their civil service and an initiative of a woman helping Romja with sewing classes. Then, the usual litany about camps: In Sainte Luce sur Loire in Western France, the camp was closed but the situation is still tense with many Roma still not re-lodged. In Nantes, a reflection on Roma and the city. Near Paris, in the Essonne, a camp has been destroyed; in Arcueuil, several Roma are threatened with expulsion; In Tireil sur Seine, the state promises the camp closure until the summer; in Ivry, a more successful story of integration; and finally, along the Marne river, garbage collection and camp closure.
