Very little news this week in France. In the South, neighbours of a future “insertion village” for Roma in Montpellier are protesting; in the North, in Hautbourdin, a camp burnt down, and someone took the opportunity to steal the belongings of the Roma; and near Paris, in Triel sur Seine, residents are asking for a camp to be closed.
Finally, news on criminality with the trial of the young Roma pickpockets from Paris’ Disneyland and with the arrest in Perpignan of 17 Roma accused of having organised dozens of pickpockets in Montpellier.

Romani Rose, the President of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma considers anti-Gypsism as a widespread social problem. According to him, Sinti and Roma still have to fight against exclusion. He also opposed the recognition of several Balkan countries as “safe” for Roma.

The crypt of a Sinti family was defaced in a racially motivated attack in Germany. In addition, SS runes were drawn in the snow on their car, leaving little doubt that this is motivated by hate.

Rome, Roma, and Mafia

Several Roma families are connected to the Casamonica Mafia clan which controls a large part of Rome’s criminal activities. The Carabinieri, have carried out the seizure of 430 assets worth over 4 million euros (including a three-storey building, a prestigious villa and various land on the outskirts of Rome) belonging to the Roma family Di Silvio.
Not good for all of us.

How about finding a solution for the roughly 20’000 Roma who live in those camps?

The biggest news this week was that the expulsion of a Roma camp in Lille, in the North of France in November 2017 was illegal… The town and the State were condemned for having proceeded with the expulsion without a court order during the winter moratorium. Nevertheless, the people who were expulsed are still not lodged properly.
Near Paris, the snow in the capital renders life miserable in some of the camps. In Triel, near Paris, more than 700 people signed a petition to ask for the closure of a camp. In Western France, near Angers, people who were expulsed are suffering from the cold. In another town, residents are petitioning the mayor for the closure of a camp. In Perpignan, an association is trying to help the Roma whose camp was recently destroyed by a fire. In Montpellier, the local Gitans are opposed to the creation of a Roma insertion camp near their homes. In Nice, 36 people were expulsed. And finally, in the Grenoble region, in Fontaine, a call of an action plan rather than the usual policy of expulsions.

Slovenian Slums

On the occasion of the visit in Novo Mesto of Borut Pahor, the Slovenian President, Bogdan Miklič, President of the Roma Union of Dolenjska, showed the President the life of the Roma in the largest Roma settlement Žabjak, and pointed out that many of the Roma have been living without electricity or water for more than seventy years in extremely bad conditions. He was also critical of the municipality, which does too little for the Roma settlements and warned of their uncontrolled spread. He went somewhat overboard though in comparing the situation of the slums with that of Darfur … This is a comparison better not done.

Plauen: It Was a Crime

The fire that ripped through a house mostly inhabited by Roma and migrants was most probably of criminal origins. A 26 years old man from Dresden was arrested on suspicion of arson.

A new exhibition in Paris, entitled “Mondes Tsiganes” purportedly tells the story of the “Nomads”, be they Sinti, Manouches, or Roma (Sic.).
Well, it pushes a view full of stereotypes which is historically totally inaccurate.

The State of Schleswig Holstein Sinti and Roma Association is being pilloried for mismanagement: bills for more than 60’000 EUR are missing, the member of the association used cars for private purposes, etc.
This is better than expected as in the beginning, the organisation was de-facto accused to have used money for private purposes. This no longer seems to be the case.

Plauen: Fire …

Again the city of Plauen, which made it to the headlines in December after the firebombing of a house that lodged Roma. This time, a fire in a house that housed Roma on the ground floor and other people in the upper floors killed two residents. Several of the people in that building had already escaped the previous fire.

This week saw many articles in the French press on the case of an elderly man, called Youcef – of North African origins, whose house was squatted by some Roma. He had not been living in the house for many years in the town of Garches-les-Gonesses, near Paris and was surprised by the squat. A youngster called Bassem, from Lyon and also of North African origins organised the youth of this city and expelled the Roma themselves without the help of the police.
This fact made it to most papers, with mostly positive reactions, although some insist on the dangers of taking justice into one’s own hand. The youngsters of the city, insist that anyhow, the police never come there nor helps them, as they are mostly of North African origins.
This is a case of minorities against minorities. And is really bad. But is the result of the policies of the French state which neglected its “banlieues” and left the Roma in camps.

More news this week in France on Roma. Main news is the subject of another post … Other than that, the mayor of the town of Sucy is again in front of the judges (third instance) for having denied Roma children the right to go to school. Let’s hope she is definitively condemned. Near Paris, in the Essons, a fire in a Roma camp injured three people. In Lille, in the North, a camp will be definitively closed. In Sètes, in the South West of France, 62 people were moved from a camp into temporary dwellings while in Montpellier, 40 Roma delegates invited themselves to a meeting of the city council. Finally, in Montpellier too, the story of an abduction of a dog by Roma. This story is doing the rounds in France, unfortunately.

Three members of a Sinti family were arrested near Rome for robbery and kidnapping. The family answered to private advertisements for car sales, and, upon meeting with the person selling the car, sequestered them and threatened them until they transferred the car ownership to them, clearly without payment.
