Very few news this week on France and Roma. In the North of France, neighbours of a Roma camp are fed up with the situation and are asking for the closure of the camp; also in the North, one squat has been closed down; while near Paris, a camp will be shut down shortly; and finally near Nantes in Western France, an association is looking for caravans to relocate Roma (who probably never lived in caravans in the first place).

The mayor of Rome, Virgina Raggi, has set up an office whose aim is to monitor and ensure the closure of the Roma camps – long a promise she made during her election. Several Roma associations are waiting to see what is happening.
According to a recent briefing by the Association July 21, “in the face of a constant presence of Roma in informal settlements in Rome quantified in the last five years at around 2,200 / 2,500 housing units, in the last few months the estimate sank to no more than one thousand units. This decline is explained by less arrivals from other countries (Romania), from transfers to other European countries (Spain, France and Germany) and largely from the transition from informal settlements to old unused industrial facilities. In a city with about 2.9 million inhabitants, Roma people in informal settlements account for only 0.03% of the Roma population.”

Two articles about Roma travellers camping on a private (and rented) plot of land in the canton Bern.
The first one, from the Berner Zeitung states that there were no issues with Roma – at least until the arrival of a group of Roma from Spain who did leave a mess. The second one, from the Blick (a Swiss tabloid) states that all Roma are dirtying the neighbourhood, are defecating everywhere etc… Same story, two views. And clearly the Blich guys were not on the spot.
In addition, the papers (and the title of the Berner Zeitung) suggest that there are many more Roma travellers in Switzerland. This is false.

More news on Roma in France – an usual pattern during the holiday season. In Marseilles, the largest Roma settlement of the city was closed, leaving 200 people on the street; another camp was closed in the Var, with journalist showing a video that suggest Roma were stealing scooters and cars; in Toulouse, a camp will be closed this coming Monday; in Angers, in Western France, on the one hand a solidarity manifestation for Roma and on the other, a camp that will probably be closed; in Lille, a Roma camp totally burnt down; and near Paris, a communist mayor launched an operation blocking a major highway to protest against a squat along that road and ask for the government to undertake something.
