Unfortunately, a standard week in France. And not only outside Paris or Lille, but also in smaller cities. First, an expulsion in St. Etienne, in the centre of France; then in Angers, in Western France, where Kosovo Roma will be expulsed from their camp and in Nantes, were a camp is slowly being closed; in the North of France, a fight for granting Roma children a special tariff in public transports (a tariff that all other school children have) is ongoing; and then, the Paris region with Roma allowed to stay (for the time being) in disaffected hospital buildings in Melun; a new illegal camp along the Marne river; a camp in Bonneuil threatened with closure; and a hefty bill for a clean-up of a former camp in Poissy, on the site of the Paris St. Germain football club training centre.

We’re back to “normal”, i.e. to the litany of expulsions and camps closures in France. You’d really think that for less than 20’000 people in France (and in France since several years), there could be a better solution …
First, the expulsion of the Roma who camped on the future training grounds of the Paris St. Germain football club – actually astonishing that they managed to stay that long; in Montreuil, just outside Paris, further expulsions; in Limeil, residents request the closure of a Roma camp; in Melun, Roma families living on a disaffected hospital site are asking for an extenson so that their children can go to school; in the North in Lille, a new camping site along the river increased tension with local; in Nice, another site has been cleared; in Annecy in the Alps, a camp has been closed putting 71 people on the street.

Ten years of action – this is the title of a manifestation that happened on October 7th in Lille in the north of France to celebrate the engagement of several associations helping Roma.
In other parts of France, other news: In Antibes, in the South of France, an association helps Roma children doing their school homework; and in Paris, videos from several artists, one of which shows work with children from a Roma camp can be seen.
More in line with the usual French News, 3 camps are closed in Montigny, near Paris; earth is piled on a site near Paris to prevent the creation of a new camp; a policeman wounded by a dog during an intervention in a Roma Camp in the North of France; the case of a pensioner who shot and killed Roma burglars in the South of France is on trial; and finally a doom ad gloom set of news from the extreme rightist Breizh Info – always on the forefront of assimilating Roma and migrants to criminals.
