Survey on Roma
We reported recently on the survey on Roma in the Western Balkans. It seems that the AP press ageny got their numbers a bit mixed up. Not that it significantly changes the main issue of such surveys, namely the under-representation of integrated Roma.

Balkan and Roma
A survey on the situation of Roma by the United Nations Development Program and the World Bank, supported by the European Commission in the Western Balkan, while showing some progress highlighted high unemployment (up to 80%) and continuing discrimination.
As usual, these studies need to be taken with a grain of salt as they never include integrated Roma – tilting the results.

The term “Gypsy” is still used commonly among Broadway performers. Nevertheless, the Actors’ Association is renouncing the use of the term, out of respect to Roma.

Zigeunerschnitzel
The young socialists in Szitwerland want to forbid the term “Zigeunerschnitzel” – a form of grilled meat. The controversy went further and led to discussions about a festival in Switzerland organised by the “Fahrendes Zigeuner Kulturzentrum” – a Jenische Organisation that has been organising events for the last 30 years. The action is now being extended to the use of “Zigeuner” a term which is definitively derogatory.
