Is it a trend? Or is it a change? The news this week on Roma in France are definitively different. Education, about a Romni in Montreuil fighting for the enrolment of Roma children in school; help, with a story of students of a prestigious French university (Science Po) devoting time to Roma in Poitiers; a Roma manifestation in Nice about the living conditions in Romania; a movie about a Roma family; an integration centre is being discussed in the North of France and one opened near Paris in Ivry; and then the usual news, a fire in a camp in the North, and a camp closure near Paris.
Finally, racism in France with Moslems and Roma coming on the top of the league … A depressing pattern in Europe.

Another article on bride selling – this time in Croatia, a country where racism runs anyhow high. Again, the right question is not being asked: Is it “selling” or is it an early wedding with the Vlach tradition of paying the father of the bride.
Such small differentiations are probably too much to ask.

A survey on the situation of Roma by the United Nations Development Program and the World Bank, supported by the European Commission in the Western Balkan, while showing some progress highlighted high unemployment (up to 80%) and continuing discrimination.
As usual, these studies need to be taken with a grain of salt as they never include integrated Roma – tilting the results.

They are appealing their conviction.

Members of the Roma band “Pasrno Grast” were refused entry in a disco in Budapest on most probably on the grounds of them being Roma. This in spite of the fact that the band is well known in Hungary and its concerts are attended by many non-Roma Hungarians.

Slovakia, Roma, and the Press

In the media, Roma are mostly depicted as a problem and as criminals. They are the most negatively represented group in Slovakia. Majority views sees them as a threat. These are just a few conclusions resulting from the Strategy for Mitigating Stereotypes and Prejudices against the Roma Population, prepared for the Interior Ministry.
This is also shown, by the research carried out by Romano Kher – the Roma House and the Institute for Well-Managed Society. Most media reports on Roma in which respondents’ residence was identifiable were talking about Roma in settlements. However, according to the latest Atlas of Roma Communities in 2013, the majority of Roma live scattered among the majority. Only about 18% of the Roma live in segregated settlements outside the municipality. In absolute figures this translates to about 74-thousand people.
