Slovakia and Racism

Milan Mazurek, an extreme rightist is being investigated for racist comments he made in the Zilina radio Frontinus. He came to the radio in October 2016 instead of Kotleba, the head of the extreme rightist party in Slovakia. The radio itself is also under investigation for breaching broadcasting standards and violating impartiality and objectivity standards in the news.

Hungary: Operetta on Rroma

A Hungarian Operetta on Rroma has debuted at the Hungarian National Theatre. The play has been on stage in 2014 in Hungary and abroad. The performance claims to show f Roma Culture and traditions and to seek authentic Gypsy music and dance show of the world.
The plot however, is clearly biased towards the life in the Cigany Telep, the Rroma ghettoes in villages and towns of Hungary. Quite full of stereotypes.

Czech Republic: Rrom Sentenced for Racism

A young Rrom was sentenced to 8 months of prison for racism for having shouted “Czech f*ckers” during a commemoration for the young Rrom who was killed in a pizzeria a while back. The man was his cousin.
Using terms slandering Rroma is apparently not treated the same way, otherwise, there would be many people in Jail in that country.

France: Case against Valls

Home Guard – A Hungarian Movie

A long review on a new Hungarian movie “Home Guard” about right wing extremists taking over a small town in Hungary. The basic problem of the movie is its obvious racial overtones, especially against Rroma who are represented exclusively as thieves, liars, etc. All stereotypes usually associated to them by the general Hungarian public are present here.

HEKS, the Protestant help organisation is advertising for donations using all clichés about Rroma. If you watch the pictures, you find them all.
While the situation of Rroma in Kosovo is bad, it is not all ghettoes. Rroma there were integrated and had houses in the cities etc. In brief, this kind of campaign shows that stereotypes also exist in NGOs and simply re-inforce the prevalent views.

European Union Admits Failure

The European Agency of Fundamental Rights admitted failure in stopping the discrimination against Rroma. Again the 80% figure of Rroma living under poverty. We repeat, it is 80% of the 36’000 interviewed Rroma. This is different, but it seems that some journalists ought to go back to school and learn about percentages.
