An Award for a Young Activist

Ireland: Racism and Poverty

A new report in Ireland shows that Rroma are often affected by racism and are more prone to poverty. The survey was conducted by Rroma activists and covered 30 households, i.e. a rather small number.
Irish Integration minister, David Stanton, meanwhile said that Rroma must be integrated.

Bratislava: Roma Youth Empowerment

The Human Right directorate of the European Commission organised a conference in Bratislava with roughly 200 young Rroma from 30 countries on the theme of Roma Youth Empowerment. These young Rroma got the opportunity to meet and speak with members of the commission and other EU representatives as well as to exchange views and experience. The organisers awarded prices, among which for best Rroma NGO, the Romanian Impreuna; best media, Slovenian Radio Romic; and best personality, which went to Sampicha Souleiman from Greece for his work against stereotypes.

Zigeunerschnitzel

Germany has many dishes that are called “Zigeuner” or Gypsy. There have been calls to change these names. A restaurant owner in Wiesbaden indeed did this: Instead of Zigeunerschnitzel – a Gypsy steak – he re-labelled it “Sinti und Roma Schnitzel” – Sinti and Roma Steak. He now has a racism complaint against him.

Myria, a Belgian Federal organisation on migration issued its 19th report on human trafficking. In Belgium, 33 infractions to the law on human trafficking were related to begging and implicitly to Rroma.
Enough for the Press to title and generalise that all beggars are in the hands of human traffickers and a mafia, stereotypes that are totally untrue and dangerous. Really BAD!!!
And across the border, in the North of France, the police tries to arrest beggars in Lille … This will not solve the problem.

UK Media Slammed for Racism

The ECRI, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance slammed the UK press for using ““offensive, discriminatory and provocative terminology” and fuelling the rise in racist and xenophobic attacks after the Brexit vote.”

Slovakia: The Origins of Racism

An article on the origins of the current racism in Slovakia, which, according to the author can be traced to the “Shock therapy after the fall of the Iron Curtain” which brought “Slovakia capitalism without its natural development, which often lasted even 100 years” resulting in a “real capitalism without the bourgeoisie, without intellectual elite that would have supported it.” The author also goes back further to the fact that Slovakia was built on the remnants of the Austrian Hungarian Empire, but forgetting that the policies of exclusion and racism were started under that regime in the 18th century.

Training on Human Rights and Anti-Tsiganism

The council of Europe is inviting young people to apply to a regional training on combatting anti-Tisganism though human rights to be held in Odessa, in the Ukraine.
Frankly, teaching people about their human rights when their legal rights are not even respected is, at least in our minds, not the best way to fight discrimination. We’ve seen that in several countries.

Gypsy Wedding

The video of an expensive (but not necessarily chic) wedding of Rroma in Slovakia has gone viral. And resulted in articles in several papers.
Not the best advertisement for Rroma to say the least, if you want to stop stereotypes.

Rroma Women and Reproductive Rights

Actually, the topic is an important one. The article speaks about reproductive rights, the right to determine when becoming pregnant, healthcare and health insurance, and other topics that are clearly extremely important.
WORTHWHILE READ, as it highlights what discrimination and segregation implies for women and their children. Well done!
Unfortunately, it also leaves generalisations that are not acceptable from an EU representative. There is an undertone of Rroma as being poor and uneducated that is somehow disturbing. Read for yourself, comments welcome!

Romani Rose: Scheuer is Racist

The president of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, Romani Rose, accused Andreas Scheuer, the general Secretary of the CSU in Germany of racism. Scheuer has proposed to give preference to give preference to Christian refugees and migrants.
Romani Rose rightly accuses him of playing with “racist resentment” which is extremely dangerous.

Appart from the news on the town of Saint-Ouen ordered to enrol Rroma children in school, the news is (unfortunately as usual). Still no solution for the Rroma who were expulsed in Monteruil, this is spite of a lot of mobilisation; the Rroma who occupied the island of the impressionists in Chatou have left; in Western France, the prefect of the Loire Atlantique discussed possible means of integrating Rroma in Nantes; in Bordeaux, a camp was closed; in Albi, in the South, no solution has yet been found to the Albanian asylum seekers; in the North, in Hautbourdin, the Rroma can stay; a positive story on an association helping young Rroma to learn near Paris; a mayor complaining of having to enrol Rroma children in classes (again); and finally, a really BAD story on beggars and human trafficking re-inforcing all stereotypes.

Switzerland: Criminal Complaint against Politician

The main Rroma organisations from Switzerland, together with the Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker lodged a criminal complaint for racism against the Green Liberal politician Nathan Güntensperger from Bern. This politician made derogatory and generalising comments against all Rroma in a letter to a newspaper.
The bad thing is that the 20 Minutes paper added a poll to the article: The choices were: Do you agree with the criminal complaint? No, one is allowed to say what one thinks! And a last one which was worse. Interestingly, the poll has been changed, but not for the better. That is about conflicts with travellers …
