A primary school in Hannover, Germany, is asking the government to limit the number of Roma children that they have to take. Reason behind it is that the city created a new centre for homeless people in the territory covered by the school, and moved a number of Roma there. The school is asking the city to spread the children in other schools.

Moldova and Roma

According to the executive director of the National Association of Public Mediators Valeriu Celdararu, education is one of the most acute problems of the Roma community in the Republic of Moldova. According to him, about 80% of the Roma population is illiterate, and due to lack of education they cannot get a job, respectively, cannot access medical services, and fall into a vicious circle of poverty and exclusion.
Never mind that no one agrees how many Roma live in Moldova, which casts a doubt on the 80%, there are many poor uneducated Roma in the country.

Not many news in France on Roma this week. An article in Libération is somewhat disturbing. While it is called “No one has Roma friends, I asked myself why”, it nevertheless perpetuates clichés which is what the French press is doing all the time. Other than that, the usual news. In Western France, Roma children need to go to school; the site of a former camp was cleaned up in Nantes; near Paris, a squat was damaged by fire; and in the North, several housing projects, also targeted at Roma will be funded.

Slovakia: Community Centre

A Roma community centre will be built in Liptovska Teplicka in central Slovakia. It is meant to help schooling Roma in manual and computer work and is funded by the EU.

Ábel Ravasz, the Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Government for Roma Communities wants to focus on education and housing this year. On housing, the focus will be in improving living conditions (water, electricity) for the community, and on education, the focus will be on pre-school help.

The data on the academic results of the Roma community continue to worry. 64% of Roma children leave the classroom without the diploma of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) while the dropout rate of the rest of school children is at 16%. This gap began to be reduced little by little during the last years thanks to initiatives such as the Promociona program, promoted by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, which has been developing in other Asturian councils since 2009.

Many news on camps this week. Main topic, a camp near Paris in Buchelay. The camp is slated for closure but there is no alternative. In the North, a collective defending Roma is set for the long term. They have done a real good job so far. In Western France, in Nantes, a camp burnt down after a fight. In Toulouse, 30 children live in unacceptable conditions; in Sète, in the South of France, a camp is slowly emptying; in Nice, a place to help children after school has just opened; and in the Alps, a squat was evacuated.
