Bulgaria and Legal Aid
The Roma Academy of Culture and Education (RAKO) in Sliven is proposing the establishment of a Bulgarian Roma Cultural Institute. The proposal was made by Stella Kostova from RACO at the conference “Support for the Vulnerable and Roma”, organized by BTA in Sliven within the initiative “Bulgarian Voices for Europe”.

Ukraine, Roma, and Education
About 30 Roma women and girls from Odesa Oblast completed financial and information literacy training, which consisted of three trainings and homework assignments. The participants of the trainings, in particular, learned to plan and manage an individual / family budget, safely work with various information and detect fakes, use government online services for employment and social assistance. According to the organisers, this will help Roma women and girls to become more financially independent and strengthen their socio-economic capacity in the difficult context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bulgaria: Invited
Four young musicians from the Roma settlement of Nadezhda in Sliven will play in the Pierre Boulez Hall of the Paris Philharmonic on February 26. They are invited to take part in a classical concert of 120 young people from 27 countries as part of the DEMOS project of one of the largest philharmonics in the world, which provides a stage for children from social groups with difficult access to culture and education.

Slovakia: Roma Action Plan
The EU driven Strategy for Equality, Inclusion and Roma Participation until 2030 takes the form of the first action plan. The proposal of assignments and tasks for the period 2022-2024 was submitted by the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic to an interdepartmental comment procedure.
The action plan proposes measures in five priority areas: The areas of employment, education, health and housing are key to meeting the goals of the strategy, special emphasis is also placed on intensifying interventions in the fight against anti-Roma racism.

Hungary and Roma
Hungary’s Roma suffer from exclusion, poverty and a lack of education. But many Roma politicians are ensnared in conflict and corruption instead of finding a remedy. And there are no Roma in Parliament.
Orban’s government is fuelling this corruption in search for votes.

The person arrested for the murder of a young teacher, Ashling Murphy, is a Slovak, and apparently also Rom. This is bad. A Slovak MP, Peter Pollak, urged to refrain from collective guilt on Roma.

Germany: Project and Exhibition
Around 60 youngsters from the Albert Einstein School (AES) will now be able to guide their classmates through an exhibition entitled “The Path of the Sinti and Roma”. They have been trained accordingly. The students are involved in a project called “School without Racism – School with Courage”.

Roma Settlement in Slovenia
Although the municipality of Škocjan does not officially have an autochthonous Roma minority and thus no Roma councillor, there are more Roma there every year. More than three hundred Roma already live in two settlements in Dobruška. This means that in a municipality with about 3,400 inhabitants, about ten percent of the Roma population already has. The school already has a fifth or 20 percent of schoolchildren are Roma children.
The settlements have water, and the municipality installed chemical toilets.

Belgrade and Roma
Many Roma children and adolescents in Belgrade are forced to work. They do not go to school regularly, and cultural practices and sports activities are often beyond their reach. The (per)Spective project wants to open the doors of cinemas and museums to them.

Slovakia and Education
An article about a schoolteacher, teaching at a Roma school, who says schoolbooks need to be made more attractive. To make it easier for Roma children, she designed special workbooks with letters for dyslexics.
She definitively helps Roma in her school. Whether her approach is the right one remains to be seen.
