Slovakia: Wallenberg Price

The recipients of this year Wallenberg price, named after the Swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Jews in Hungary during World War Two were named. Among them there is a Rroma association, Chakra teachings of Moldava nad Bodvou. The aim of the association is to achieve integration through education.

The Story of an Expulsion

An interview of the young Rromni Leonarda Dibrani who was expulsed from France together with her family (in spite of being in school). While they were expelled to Kosovo, she now lives in Croatia, which says a lot about the “safety” of Kosovo for Rroma. And it is difficult for her.

A study of the university of Edinburgh suggests that bullying against Rroma and travellers is widespread and sometime condoned or at least tolerated by teachers, resulting in a self imposed segregation, where these population simply cease to send their children to school.

A study of the conditions – especially for women – in camps in the Piedmont region of Italy showed unsurprisingly a low education level, deprivation, and also marriage at a young age, around 16 or 17, an increase since the last study.

Rome: A move on the Camps

Now it’s official. On December 21, Roma Capitale, at the request of Laura Baldassarre, the Councillor of People, School and Community Solidarity, suspended calls for tenders for the management of the camps, the so-called “equipped villages”.
This should effectively mean the closure of these camps who are a disgrace.

European Union Admits Failure

The European Agency of Fundamental Rights admitted failure in stopping the discrimination against Rroma. Again the 80% figure of Rroma living under poverty. We repeat, it is 80% of the 36’000 interviewed Rroma. This is different, but it seems that some journalists ought to go back to school and learn about percentages.

Usual lot of news in France. First, a mayor in the XVth Arrondissement in Paris refused the access to the school canteen to 20 poor children, many of which were Rroma. His ratiuonale, they were getting a free lunch funded by Emmäus, a chrity, close to the school. BAD!
Other than that: A fire in a squat near Paris puts 50 people out in the street; a new solution is proposed to the Rroma who were expulsed in Montreuil more than hundred days ago and whose children are not is school as they have no permanent residence; another fire in Marseilles; better news in the North of France, with a collective helping Rroma integrate, the story of Rroma who are there since 6 years, and the constriction of social housing; and in the West, the creation of four or five camping sites for Rroma (it is an obligation in France) and the questions of a cleanup of former camping sites that are full of garbage, although often not left by Rroma).

Slovakia: Education and Rroma

Education for the Rroma minority is failing. Rroma, who are often put into special schools are de-facto barred from higher education, be it secondary or higher. This even though it is proven, that education is the best way to prevent unemployment.
