On January 12, 1942, the Germans completed the liquidation of the Roma camp located in the Litzmannstadt Ghetto in Łódź. The Germans took 5,000 people to Łódź. Mostly Roma from the border of Austria and Hungary. Many of them died in the camp, the rest were murdered in the gas chambers.

In November 1941, in the Litzmannstadt Ghetto, Nazis established a sub-camp to which Roma and Sinti were brought from the Burgenland. After several weeks, on January 5, 1942, the deportation of prisoners to the extermination camp in Chełmno nad Nerem began, where several thousand people were brutally murdered.

The Museum and Memorial Site in Sobibór has been nominated for the prestigious title of European Museum of the Year 2024. The competition is organized by the European Museum Forum – an independent, non-governmental organization operating under the auspices of the Council of Europe, whose mission is to promote innovation in museology. The winners will be announced in early May 2024. The European Museum of the Year Award is considered the most important distinction for European museums.

Shortly before the end of the war, Hungarians committed mass murder against Hungarians: At the beginning of February 1945, snipers and gendarmes gathered local Roma at the border of Várpalota, dug a pit with them, and then shot them: one hundred and eighteen people were murdered, while another five victims were executed in the main square of the city.

Despite this, plans for a memorial to the victims of the Roma Holocaust were prepared in Hungary early in 1974, even by international comparison: the sculptor was György Jovánovics, an outstanding figure of the neo-avant-garde generation of artists. The sculptor was interviewed by art historian Dániel Véri.

Exhibition on Roma and the Holocaust

In the gallery of the City History Museum in Fiľakovo, Slovakia, visitors will be able to view the exhibition of the Dutch photographer Jutka Rona entitled Hungarian Gypsies – Survivors’ Testimony dedicated to the memory of the Hungarian Roma holocaust.

Hungarian-born photographer Jutka Rona was two years old when her parents immigrated to the Netherlands.

More news this week about Roma in the French press. First a conference that will take place next week about the Genocide of the Roma during the Holocaust, and its French specificities. This is quite uncommon. In Rezé, in Western France, an open reunion between the mayor, politicians and residents about a project for Roma resulted in insults and threats against politicians. Then, more of the usual news. Near Paris, a camp that was disbanded has turned in a huge open air garbage dump; in another commune around Paris, residents are complaining of the stench created by a Roma camp; in another one, Roma were forced to leave their camp all the while being threatened and insulted by local residents; in Grenoble, a camp was closed; and finally in Strasbourg, an article about row between two Romanian Roma families which ended tragically in an accident.
