75 Years Ago

Seventy-five years ago, the Nazis issued the Auschwitz laws (Auschwitz Erlass) which gave the order for the deportation of Sinti and Roma and sent them to their death.
This day is being commemorated across Germany.

On December 16th, a commemoration on the 75th anniversary of the “Auschwitz Decree” by Hermann Goering ordering the deportation and thus annihilation of the Sinti and Roma will be held on the site of the former Sachsenhausen camp.

More background on the recent news that an Israeli scholar claims that Roma are the lost Israelite tribe of Samuel. He has a Facebook page and a foundation called Atsigana whose goal is to establish a Roma Holocaust museum (in itself a worthy goal).
Only issue, his theories are totally wrong.

A Young Sinto

A young Sinto, Giano Weiss from the city of Paderborn, is engaging himself for the remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust in his city and for trying to establish the facts. He was received by the Prime Minister of the State of Northwest Westphalia.

Lety at Last

Two US articles on Lety and the fact that the Czech government will finally buy the pig farm on the site.
Unfortunately, both articles contain misleading information. That 1’300 Roma were sent to Auschwitz from there, that there were 10’000 Roma in the Czech Republic before the War etc. Fact is that many people who were shipped to Auschwitz were not registered, and that no one knows how many Roma there was in the Czech Republic before the war.
One thing though is sure: After the War, there were none left.
May they rest in peace.

The Roma museum will be in charge of the new memorial museum in the Hodonin Roma concentration camp.
The memorial was to be opened last August but the opening was deferred due to a controversy on who would be running it going forward.
