Slovenia and Roma

The Slovenian Parliamentary Committee for Internal Affairs, Public Administration and Local Self-Government today took note of the tenth report on the situation of the Roma community in Slovenia for the year 2022. A resolution was unanimously adopted proposing to the Education Committee and the government that in solving the challenges of the issue, special emphasis is placed on the upbringing and education of Roma children.

Another article on the Roma “Problem” in Slovenia in the regions of Dolenjci, Belokranjci, and Posavci. The situation is difficult, but to write what is in the article is not exactly helpful. The article says:

“The majority of Roma are uneducated and consequently unemployed. Roma settlements, most of which grew up on foreign land, with “black” houses, became ghettos, and it is difficult to talk about any kind of socialization. The main source of livelihood for the majority is social transfers, which depend on the size of the family – more children, more money. But what if many spend it on alcohol, drugs and weapons, and crime and threats to people’s safety are also connected to this.”

So in brief, we are all uneducated unemployed social security abusers with many children who are alcoholics and drug addicts… How about a sanity check about those statements?

Montenegro “Young, brave, loud”

The NGO “Center for the Affirmation of the RE Population – CAREP” organized a two-day workshop on the topic of democracy, and 20 young people from the municipalities of Nikšić and Plužine took part.

The workshop was realized as part of the “Young, brave, loud” project.

“With this project, we want to increase the degree of participation of young people in the local community, especially young people from vulnerable groups, and thus contribute to social cohesion in Nikšić and Plužine. Young people are very interested in our activities, and we will also have a two-day training on youth participation, English lessons language, swimming and music, but also a two-month, paid internship program for young people from the RE community”, explained Nardi Ahmetović, executive director of the NGO “CAREP”.

An action plan for the development of the Roma community in the area of the municipality of Dobrovnik will be presented shortly. The plan was compiled by the Murska Sobota Development Centre and the Lendava People’s University.

Minister of the Interior Boštjan Poklukar met with the mayor of the municipality of Črnomelj Andrej Kavško. They mainly talked about the removal of the fence on the southern border, the reimbursement of costs due to the increased control of the state border and Roma issues.
