On Sunday, 10 May 2026 at 12:00 CET, the annual commemoration will be held to honour the memories of the victims of what was once a Roma concentration camp in Lety u Písku. The Event is organized by the Committee for the Redress of the Roma Holocaust in the Czech Republic (VPORH) with the support of the Czech Culture Ministry and the Foundation for Holocaust Victims.

Descendants of survivors of the Genocide of the Roma in the Czech Republic expressed reservations in a joint statement about how memorialisation is handled in Czechia. First and foremose, the use of “Gypy” camp insetad of concentration camp, but they mentioned other issues such as the lack of consultation with the families of survivors and the used and choice of vicual materials.

On Sunday, May 11, 2025, at 12 noon, a traditional commemoration of the Roma and Sinti Holocaust victims will take place in Lety u Písku, which will take place at the site of the former so-called gypsy camp. The annual gathering commemorates the tragic fate of hundreds of Roma men, women and children who were deported from this place to extermination camps. The commemoration will also be possible to watch live this year thanks to the first Roma internet television, ROMEA TV, which will offer a live broadcast from the site.

Lety Pigsty Gone

The demolition of the former pigsty on the site of the Lety Roma concentration camp for Roma ended. The company is now statically securing two columns from the former pigsty hall, which will be part of the upcoming exhibition.

The Museum of Roma Culture in Lety wants to open the visitor centre in the second half of 2023, or at the beginning of 2024. There were three bids for the construction of the centre, but the museum has not yet chosen a winner. The museum calculated in the tender a price of 73.5 million crowns without VAT.

Another obituary of Čeněk Růžička, a Romano activist who fought his entire life for the closure of the pig farm on the site of the former concentration camp of Lety. He was buried yesterday.
