Recent social media reports stated that hundred if not thousands of Roma from the Lunik IX housing estate in Košice, a notorious Roma neighbourhood, were to relocate to Trebišov. Mayor Marek Čižmár rejected these reports as nonsense: “It’s just a godforsaken lie and deception, because no such relocation has taken place, is not taking place and will not take place.”

According to the mayor, this is a form of election campaign that has been used in the past.

A study on poverty driven migration examines the topic of poverty migration from a sociological perspective in order to understand the situation of those affected from a scientific perspective. ITts focus is on the everyday lives of those in need and how they deal with potential stigmatization. Using key question-based interviews with Slovak and Romanian citizens, the living conditions of those in need were examined. The results show that those in need lack vital basic necessities in their countries of origin, which is why commuter migration to Western Europe is the only option.

A Berlin hotel housing Sinti and Roma has been a crime hotspot for years. Now, the spokesperson for the Berlin Police Union (GdP), Benjamin Jendro, has advocated for revoking Schengen travel rights for criminal EU foreigners. “We need to talk about perhaps not necessarily creating incentives for these people to come here,” Jendro told “Welt TV.” “We’re talking about criminal offenses. People are deliberately sent to steal. We’re talking about disturbances of the peace, physical assault, and threats.”

The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O’Flaherty, has called on Finland to continue to honour its strong record in promoting and defending human rights, following a visit to the country from 23 to 26 September, which focused on the situation of Roma and migration and asylum issues.
