A new Italian Netflix series, “Suburra” showcases the Mafia and its life. Unfortunately, they also include a young Rom who is one of the central figures of the series.

Pennsylvania: Screening of our School
Quite a few people of the town of Californai (PA) went to see a screening of the movie “our school” by Miruna Coca-Cozma – an excellent movie which highlights the difficulties and racism faced by Roma in Romania.
The town was at the centre of a media frenzy with the arrival of ca 50 Roma refugees from Romania.

Germany on a French Movie
Romani Rose, from the central Council of German Sinti and Roma strongly condemned the movie “A bras Ouverts” [Hereinspaziert in German] from the French comedian Christian Clavier. We had already reported that in France the movie was also strongly condemned for its stereotypical depiction of Roma.

A Ciambra
The second movie from Jonas Carpignano has Martin Scorcese and tells the story of a adolescent Rom in Calabria who befriends a refugee from Burkina. All actors are amateurs.

Disneyland Roma
The trial of the Romanian Roma (and a few others) who picked the pockets of tourists in the Disneyland near Paris (and apparently made 1 Mio EUR) is in full swing. According to the journalist, it is worthy of a Kusturica movie.
The article is good with one exception – the use of “clan” in this context. One family is definitively not a clan – and this term is abused in the European Press in the context of Roma.

Roma are insisting on a proper investigation of the police intervention 4 years ago in Moldavia nad Bodvou, where the police stood accused of torture and mistreatment but was finally recently exonerated.

A Hole in the Head
A long article about the movie “A Hole in the Head” about the Rroma Holocaust, as well as an interview of Raymond Gurene a French manouche who is 100 years old and who managed to escape the Holocaust.

While most news this last week were devoted to the reaction on the movie ‘A bras Ouverts”, there are nevertheless quite a few news on camps and evictions, unfortunately.
Camps closures in Grigny, in the Essonne, in Lagny sur Marne and in Champlan, near Paris; in Dijon, volunteers constructed house for Rroma (GOOD!); in Bordeaux, several squats will be destroyed this summer; for in Marseilles, association protested the upcoming destruction of a camp; and in Antibes, in the South, a camp was closed with the help of the police.

The moive “A bras ouverts” – with open arms – is rightly seen in France as being racist. Many articles on this topic, and on the stereotypes.
So while it is bad that such a movie was made, it is definitively good that it prompts quite a bit of discussion, and good discussion.
