Ukraine and Roma

The Council of Europe chided Ukraine on the continuing discrimination of Roma in that country. The Advisory Committee recommends that the Ukrainian authorities immediately enact appropriate legislation to protect national minorities; promote respect and fight against = stereotypes in political discourse and society as a whole; provide firm legal guarantees for the protection and use of all minority languages; help in stopping the constant segregation of Roma children in schools and ensuring that the rights of national minorities will not be limited due to changes in administrative boundaries.

Germany: Discrimination

Representatives of the Sinti and Roma have complained against discrimination on Thursday to the Berlin House of Representatives. They say that despite the action plan decided in 2013 they are still discriminated against and socially disadvantaged. This is especially the case when looking for a job or a flat, where they hardly have a chance.

The Bern Young SVP (the Swiss rightist party) who posted a poster against Roma are now being investigated by the prosecutor’s office for racism.
Let’s see whether they will be condemned, which is far from sure in Switzerland.

State Minister Christoforos Vernardakis slammed three incidents in Greece this week. First the dismantling of a Neo-Nazi cell, then a verbal attack against a Syriza MP by a Golden Dawn (extreme right) deputy, and finally the one which concerns Roma:

New Democracy’s deputy Athanassios Davakis stated that he forbade any Roma or gypsy to vote for him …

Clichés in Film

An essay on the racists clichés that are prevalent in films regarding Roma. This was clear in the children movie “Nelly’s Adventures” which portrayed Roma in a totally stereotypic fashion. What is really bad is that the filmmakers and public alike do not even realise that the depiction of Roma is racist, because the stereotypes are so firmly anchored in society.

Roma, Work, and Slovenia

Although the high rate of Roma unemployment in Central and South-Eastern Europe is often attributed to a low level of education and professional skills, one of the more important reasons is discrimination that prevents Roma from entering the labour market on an equal footing.
Integration into the labour market should be a priority in promoting a full social inclusion. Some steps towards this goal were made by the recently completed two-year international Working Roma project, which included the Novo Mesto Society for the Development of Volunteer Work.
As project coordinator Tina Cigler says, in the Working Roma project, partners from nine European countries have tried to develop new tools to prevent intolerance against Roma in the labour market, thereby increasing their employment prospects. The tools and recommendations were developed on the basis of study visits by partner countries, consultations within different groups and good practices that we detected in our partner countries: Italy, Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Greece, Malta and the United Kingdom.

Poland, YouTube, and Racism

The Pole Szymon K., a 33-year-old from Środa Wielkopolska, appears on the Internet under the name ‘IsAmUxPompa’ and produces videos that are extremely racist against Roma. He says openly “I hate Roma” and some of his videos have had more than a million views.
The Poznan prosecutor office is investigating. Everyone should ask Google to remove the guy from YouTube.

Jubilee World Congress

A Jubilee World Roma Congress will be taking place in London next summer [1-5 August]. For the first time it will be possible for all members of our communities (over 16) to vote electronically in the elections in connection with this Congress, and whosoever wishes to stand as Candidates. Democratic Transition will bring greater legitimacy and accountability and a democratic process allowing all to participate and work together for better recognition of the Roma Nation and the defeat of “anti-Gypsy” racism.

It is Better Not to Say It

Integrated Roma seldom say that they are from that minority. The better the integration, the less likely they will openly state their origins and culture, for fear of being confronted with stereotypes.

Swiss Extreme Right

The Association of Sinti and Roma Switzerland, together with the Association for the protection of threatened people lodged a legal complaint for racism against the youth wing of the Bern SVP following their publication of a poster which is essentially racist.
Even some of the SVP members seem to agree. Let’s see what the justice will do, as in Switzerland, it is not certain that this will be condemned.

Movies and Roma …

A conference on the theme of Antitziganism and Movies started in Berlin on Wednesday, February 21st. The conference was convened on the back of the controversy of the German television movie “Nelly’s Adventures” which depicted Roma in a negative and stereotypical way. These stereotypes are all too often present in movies as soon as Roma are present. This needs to stop.
