The Pope in Auschwitz: Let’s get the Facts Straight

The Pope in Auschwitz: Let’s get the Facts Straight

The Pope visited Auschwitz, met survivors, all in silence, may the souls that departed appreciate.

But the article states some incorrect facts. The mention 1.5 mio dead. This is correct. But then say 23’000 Rroma. Also correct if you “only” count those who were registered. To give a comparison, there are 300’000 registered Jews in Auschwitz. Far from the 1.5 Mio. Simply said, registered people where the ones who were not immediately gassed. Those who died on arrival are not recorded in the camp, just in the transport. So fact is: many more Rroma died in Auschwitz than the 23’000. May their souls rest in peace.

Football and Racism

Another footballer who missed a good chance to be quiet: This time it is Francesco Totti who compared players switching clubs to “Gypsies” … Well, we can only say we wished he had activated his neurones before making such a statement …

Racism in UK’s Armed Force

Police is investigating racist hate speech on an unofficial webpage of UK’s armed force. Rroma are a clear target of this racism with comments that are totally unacceptable. We hope the culprits will be weeded out of the armed forces.

Rroma Holocaust

Rroma Holocaust

A reminder that there was a Rroma holocaust. Unfortunately, the term used here is a total no-go: Porrajmos. It is first not understood by all non Vlach, and second, among Vlach, it refers more to a rape than anything else. Bad choice of words for a very real Holocaust. Let’s stick to Holocaust.

Elie Wiesel on Poland and Auschwitz

Published by:

An interesting article explaining Eleie Wiesel’s views on Poland (a “Jewish Graveyard”) and on why Auschwitz was so much uniquely Jewish for him.

Even if one disagrees with him on this latter point, as the Holocaust is also a Rroma tragedy, he was and remains one of the voices of our conscience. May he rest in peace.

Zurich: Fahrendes Kultur Zentrum

As every year, the so-called Travelling Culture Centre of Jenische, Sinti and Rroma stopped in Zurich. With a moving exhibition, a few caravans and some music, the centre aims to present the culture of travellers in Switzerland, mostly the Jenische, but to a lesser extent some of the Sinti and Rroma in that country.

More on Racism in Switzerland

The statement of the Swiss politician Jürg Michel from the rightist SVP whereby one can “recognise Gypsies with one’s nose” is earning him a few complaints. The Jenische organisations, the young socialists, the Gesselschaft für bedrohte Völker, and the Rroma Foundation have all deposited complaints with the police for blatant racism. The politician is defending himself saying he is defending minorities …

No further comments.

Racism in Switzerland

A Jenische organisation, Schäft Qwant, issued a formal complaint against a politician from the right wing SVP party for racism. The politician from Lyss stated for example “if one doesn’t recognise by sight, then one does with one’s nose” …

No comments, and let’s hope this doesn’t fall under “freedom of expression” as it often does in Switzerland.

Elie Wiesel on Romania

Elie Wiesel on Romania

Elie Wiesel, who just died, urged his native Romania to confront its past and acknowledge the deportation of Jews and Rroma from Romania. What this article misses, ist that most Rroma were not deported to camps but displaced to Transnistria n the North East where an unknown number died of hunger and illnesses.

Italy’s Infamous Rroma Camps

Italy’s Infamous Rroma Camps

An article about life inside one of these Rroma camps in Italy. One thing is somewhat missed here: Rroma are still being kept in those camps by an alliance between the State administration, the police and NGOs who are all present there. And the latest arrests in Rome have shown that the mafia hugely profited from these camps too. The comparison to Auschwitz is very much not the right one here.
