Beggars

Beggars

The Swiss Federal Court acquitted six Roma beggars fined by Geneva’s justice system for begging, stating that the fines violated the principle of proportionality as they lacked prior administrative measures. Geneva’s law prohibits begging near various establishments, but the court found that the penalties were imposed without any prior warnings or administrative actions.

The court emphasized that the definition of ‘immediate vicinity’ for prohibiting begging should only cover a few meters, and if beggars are more than 10 meters away from an entrance, they should not be penalized.

Šutar Act

Šutar Act

One year after Aleš Šutar’s death, mayors and social services report little improvement in safety and social conditions for the Roma community in southeastern Slovenia, despite the implementation of the ‘Šutar Act’.

The law, aimed at addressing social issues, has faced setbacks due to a constitutional court ruling that halted its enforcement, leading to a return to previous conditions.

While some Roma representatives claim safety has improved, they express concern over the negative impact of the law on the community’s welfare and emphasize that the actions of one individual should not reflect on the entire Roma population.

Roma, School, and Romania

Roma, School, and Romania

In Cluj County, there are 2,633 Roma students enrolled in schools, making up about 4.55% of the total student population, but only 159 have progressed to high school (9th grade). The distribution of Roma students shows 1,148 in primary education, 1,002 in secondary education, and 297 in early childhood education, with a noted increase in preschool groups.

Six classes teaching in Romani and four preschool groups operate in Cluj, with specific schools mentioned that cater to Roma students. That is probably one of the reason for the poor scores …

Written recommendations confirming Roma ethnicity for 8th-grade students applying for high school in 2027 must be issued and submitted by March 31, 2027, as per the Bucharest School Inspectorate’s guidelines. Recommendations can be issued online and must be submitted to the school by the legal representative of the student, with late submissions not being considered.

A series of deadlines and procedures are outlined for the admission process, including training sessions for teachers and information meetings for parents and students regarding special places for Roma candidates.

So, one has to prove on is Rom????

The Union of Roma Party (P.U.R.) is holding its first congress on October 23, 2026, to elect its leadership and represent the interests of Romanian citizens of Roma ethnicity.

P.U.R. was established in June 2025 and aims to ensure that Roma citizens are represented by Roma themselves in political matters, rather than being subjects of public policies designed without their input.

The party operates within the constitutional framework of Romania and the values of the European Union, advocating for equal opportunities in education, employment, and health for the Roma community.

Battle of Kumanovo

Battle of Kumanovo

The anniversary of the 1912 Battle of Kumanovo was commemorated in Leskovac, but there is still no concrete plan to include Amet Ametović in the school curriculum despite calls for recognition of his contributions.

Amet Ametović, a participant in the 1912 battle and a recipient of the Karađorđe Star with Swords, is celebrated by local institutions and the Roma community, yet his legacy remains largely unrecognized in education.

There are ongoing discussions about erecting a statue of Amet Ametović, but no specific timeline or funding has been established for this initiative.
