Latvia Roma Platform

Thanks to European funding, the Ministry of Culture will be able to continue implementing the project “Latvian Roma Platform VIII”. The Cabinet of Ministers approved the report on the project’s progress and the allocation of the necessary funds the day before, the ministry reported in a press release.

The funds are to be spent between May 1, 2025 and April 30, 2027. The funds were allocated from the pan-European program “Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values” following a competition for projects designed to promote equality, inclusiveness and participation of the Roma minority in society. The total funding for the project is 221,657 euros, of which 199,491 euros (90%) are funds provided by the European Commission.

Latvia and Roma

Attitudes towards Roma in Latvian society are changing – and for the better, admitted the President of the International Association of Roma Normunds Rudevich on the air of the Open Conversation program of Latvian Radio 4. Roma, according to him, feel integrated, but there are problems that still lie ahead.

“For Roma, integration is an outdated word. We are integrated both culturally and nationally. We are looking for our place in this state, in employment – this is our main problem. It is important that people come to our events. Only with positivity can you change attitudes and kill stereotypes,” says Normunds Rudevich.

Latvia and Roma Organisations

According to the President of the Latvian Roma Federation Osvald Jezdovskis, the situation with Roma organizations in Latvia is reminiscent of the gangster times of the nineties of the last century. He called on President Edgars Rinkević and Prime Minister Evika Silina to take part in them in order to protect the Latvian Roma Federation from groups that “monopolized state funding”, which should have been used for the benefit of the Roma.

Few things to relativise: There are several well stablished Roma organisations who indeed get funding from the state. To say that they monopolize the funds in this particular case means most probably that the Latvian Roma Federation was left out … The source, in Russian, may also show some bias.

Latvia: New President

The Congress of Latvian Roma Associations on Saturday elected Osvalds Jezdovskis, chairman of the Latvian Roma Association and Higher Roma Council, as President of the Roma of Latvia.

Jezdovskis said that a meeting of the Latvian Roma Federation is scheduled for Thursday, June 1 to decide on a strategy for the next five years. However, it is already clear that the main goal of the Federation’s activities will be to improve the living conditions of the Roma in Latvia by addressing educational, cultural and social issues.
